Baxter and Sabine, two black lab mixes, inspired owner Chris Roberts to come up with grain-free treats that are made with organic ingredients, most of which are grown on small family farms in his home state of Maine. The secret to Barkwheats treats is organic buckwheat, a nutrient-rich berry that’s a high source of plant-based protein. Chris processes the buckwheat on a buckwheat-only mill, so there’s no cross-contamination with any gluten. With buckwheat flour as the protein base, he then adds other natural ingredients to make his wholesome biscuit treats, including parsley, sea kelp, pumpkin, blueberries, sage, chamomile, lavender and honey.
Barkwheats treats are made in the USA, and Chris partners with responsible suppliers, uses recyclable packaging, and supports animal and environmental nonprofits. He says his mission is to create a business that’s not just about profits but also beneficial to “people, their pups and the planet.” Now that’s worth fetching, for sure.
