Clean the World

Clean the World

Maker Story

Saved by Soap

Reducing deadly disease around the world is often as simple as . . . soap. Every day, millions of bars of soap are discarded in the world’s hospitality industry. While in a hotel, Founder Shawn Seipler thought these two issues could have a creative solution.

Clean the World is an innovative recycling program that brings toiletries to people in need. The nonprofit partners with hotels to sanitize and recycle soap, shampoos, and lotions, then distributes them to international communities, local shelters, and food banks. And they educate people about the benefits of good hygiene, too, both in under-resourced schools in North America and abroad.

Nearly 2,000,000 children under the age of five die every year from hygiene-related illnesses. The most effective way to prevent those deaths is by hand washing with soap. Clean the World is using a readily available resource—something most of us have thrown away—to save lives.
