Maker Story

Magic Fabric

Splash Fabric’s water-repelling carryalls make standard-issue canvas seem decidedly lackluster. You may not have heard of laminated cotton, but once you feel it, you’ll get why Maker Tracy Krauter was drawn to it. The lifelong sewer, mom of three, and former park ranger was looking for an easy-to-clean fabric when she turned to making this wonderful material instead.

At her home-studio in Seattle, Tracy treats pure cotton with a biodegradable coating that makes it water and stain repellent. This beefs up the fabric’s durability and gives it a supple, matte finish—and it’s BPA- and phthalate-free, as well as food-safe. It’s then handed off to local sewers who craft it into sturdy bags and pouches perfect for carrying things like cables, makeup, and other sundries on the go.
