Girls on the Run

Youth Development Program - Boston Council

Girl Empowerment

I have been an active volunteer with Girls on the Run Greater Boston for two years, first as a coach and now as the Fundraising Director. I am passionate about the positive impact that this organization has on the communities it serves and I am delighted to bring it to the Grommet community at large.

Girls on the Run is a curriculum-based program designed to build confidence, character, and resiliency in girls aged 8-11. The
program specifically targets girls at this age to prepare them for the challenges that come with those tricky middle school years, and creatively integrates running to transform the way the girls see themselves, their opportunities, and their abilities to take on the world. Each season culminates in a 5k, but we encourage the girls to treat that finish line as the beginning and to remember the strength required to complete the race whenever they find themselves grappling with uncomfortable situations.

Girls on the Run Greater Boston held its pilot season in Fall 2010 under the auspices of Hill House, a Boston community center that initially brought the program to the city. After seven seasons, our council officially planted roots as an independent Girls on the Run 501c3 entity on January 13, 2014 in order to better serve the communities throughout the Greater Boston region. This is an exciting time for our council and local families.

Our dream as the Greater Boston council is to raise enough money to reach every girl, regardless of her means, and to educate and prepare her for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living. Confident girls grow into productive adult leaders, who in turn can make greater contributions to the world around them. We believe that this trajectory should be available to the future young women throughout the city - your support will make this dream a reality.
