Venture for America

Startup Fellowship Program

Igniting Entrepreneurship

Venture for America realizes that entrepreneurship is integral to prosperity in America. In recent years, we have seen a resurgence in the notion that anyone can transform their ideas into a business-worthy reality. The Grommet’s hometown—Boston, MA—is one of the many thriving cities that embraces this philosophy by actively fostering a vibrant startup community. Venture for America wants to revitalize other cities, like Detroit and New Orleans, by building an entrepreneurial culture.

Founded in 2011 by Andrew Yang, Venture for America is a non-profit program that mentors recent college grads and matches them with growth-stage companies. During a two-year fellowship, those grads learn to grow companies and become successful entrepreneurs based on Andrew’s philosophy that you learn by doing, and surrounding yourself by those who have done.

Venture for America believes that apprenticeships with experienced entrepreneurs give access to their wealth of knowledge and start building the confidence to achieve. Those fellows begin to think, “Okay, if they can do it, maybe I can too.”

So far, Venture for America has given 200+ burgeoning entrepreneurs the chance to realize their potential in a dozen cities across the U.S. And they plan to keep growing year after year. This hits home with us at The Grommet, as we pride ourselves on giving independent Makers that very same chance.

Grommet Launch Conversation

I first learned about Venture for America this fall when I met Joe Guy, the NYC-based community manager. As he told me about the work they're doing, I was inspired by their non-profit mission to train young entrepreneurs and put them to work in mid-size cities all over the country. The Fellows work for start-ups in these communities for at least two years, learning all they can, and then they go on to create their own new businesses. Jobs and opportunity will multiply all along the way.
