  • Materials: 100% new bone china
  • Care: Top rack dishwasher safe. Replace cold water every 3 days and wash thoroughly between refills
  • Directions: Make sure the butter is soft enough to work into the lid. Use the back of a spoon to push the butter into the lid and smooth to adhere to sides of crock and prevent air pockets. Add ⅓ cup cold water to the base and turn lid upside down to create airtight seal and store butter. Replace with fresh water every 3 days

I love using the butter bell, so you have soft butter to spread. This is actually a replacement for my original one since my top got broke.

This updated take on a French butter crock stores butter out of the fridge and keeps it perfectly spreadable and fresh. It combines storage and serving and is beautifully made in new bone china to look great on the table or countertop. Add water to the crock to create a seal that blocks air from spoiling butter (both store-bought and homemade) and keeps it fresh for up to three weeks.

Butter Bell

You might not know about the French butter crock, but this counter- and table-top icon has been in European kitchens for centuries. The Butter Bell is an update of this classic way to store butter out of the fridge that keeps it soft, spreadable, and fresh.

Lisa Tremain created The Butter Bell in 1996, and her design pays homage to the original. The two part crock and lid combine butter storage and serving in beautiful new bone china.

Add homemade or store-bought butter to the serving lid and about ⅓ cup cold water to the crock. Flip the lid upside down and place in the crock to create a seal that blocks butter-spoiling air and light from getting in. Refresh the water every few days to keep butter fresh for up to three weeks out on the counter.

This tried-and-true method has been around since the 19th century and is still a great way to keep butter tasting delicious and perfectly spreadable.
