Friendly Loom™ by Harrisville Designs

If the Friendly Loom™ by Harrisville Designs looks familiar, maybe it’s because you remember using their kits to weave your own potholders as a kid. The craft is just as fun today and the story of Harrisville Designs is one of history and nostalgia. Nestled in the Monadnock Highlands of New Hampshire is the tiny brick mill village of Harrisville, where yarn has been spun since 1794. It is the only industrial community of the early 19th century in America that still survives in its original form. The last woolen mill in Harrisville closed in 1970 when the fashion world turned to synthetic double-knit fabrics. Fortunately, this closure was very brief. In 1971, Harrisville Designs was established with a goal of preserving the textile heritage and economic vitality that had sustained the village for almost two hundred years. Beginning with a line of high-quality woolen hand-weaving and knitting yarns, Harrisville Designs soon expanded to hand-weaving looms and equipment. In the late 1980s the first of Friendly Loom™ products were developed to introduce children—maybe even you—to the world of fiber arts.
