Chicago map for downtown tourists only
06/20/2019 by Jon
I live in the Chicago suburbs and I like to have a local fold out waterproof map in my car to back up the GPS-based navigation system. I saw that this map is printed on good quality laminate, so I ordered two copies of the Chicago Red Map, one for each of our cars. But I am quite disappointed in this map and I won't be using it. This map does not depict anything to the south of Chicago's Chinatown or west of Halsted Street (misspelled on the map at "Halstead" at one point). To the north the map ends at Diversey. That limited coverage area means that a lot of major Chicago locations are not on the map. Wrigley Field (Chicago Cubs), Guaranteed Rate Field (White Sox), and the United Center (Bulls and Black Hawks), plus O'Hare airport and Midway airport, are ALL missing from this map, as they are all beyond the map's limited coverage area. So this is not really a Chicago map. It's a map of the downtown area an a bit beyond downtown. It doesn't even come close to mapping the entire City of Chicago. With that limited coverage, this map is really better suited for tourists who are staying in the Chicago downtown area. You're not going to like it if you're a local like me or if you're a tourist driving beyond the coverage area downtown. This map also has some very strange markings that are not explained in any legend. Because I know the area, I concluded that some of the markings are at CTA elevated train stations, but some of the markings are still a total mystery, even to me, and I have lived in this area for 40 years. For example, in the Lincoln Park area, the map shows four dots in a low on the western edge of the park. They don't appear to depict a CTA bus stop, nor would that explain why there would be four dots rather than just one. The map doesn't seem to show CTA bus stops, anyway. Either remove the weird markings or explain them in a legend! I have one positive thing to say about this map: it's printed on a very nice laminated waterproof stock and it folds nicely. I liked that. Too bad the map itself isn't so good. All that said, if you're a tourist and you are planning to stay in the downtown area during your Chicago visit, this map can still be useful to you, despite its shortcomings.

it he red maps are great for trips because they show city details and don't rip like paper maps.

these maps are great. Easy to fold and unfold which is almost impossible with most maps. They are plasticized so they are durable and easy to use. Great stocking stuffer for anyone new to and just learning an area.

Red Maps

When it comes to planning a trip, the Internet and guidebooks are a great source of information. But once you arrive at your destination, there’s nothing like a real map to help you get your bearings. Your smartphone may have GPS, but the small screen doesn’t show the big picture and using it while traveling can be costly.

Part map, part curated guide, Red Maps are a lightweight, easy-to-use and beautifully designed solution no city should be explored without. In addition to streets, neighborhoods, and major landmarks, each map features a selection of stores, hotels, restaurants, museums, parks and more carefully curated by a team of travel experts and updated every four to six months. Designer and company founder Jim Leniart has a strict no advertising policy—if it’s on the map, it must be noteworthy.

Made in the USA, Red Maps are matte laminated for water resistance, feature a no glare finish, and are available for 14 American Cities, 11 European cities and also come in gift sets. From the elegant design to the thoughtfully curated points of interest, Red Maps’ attention to detail takes the travel map to all new places.
