Hook & hammer

When Radka Osickova began studying fashion design she never would have imagined that the age-old craft of crocheting she’d learned from her grandmother as a child would play such a formative role in her career path. During school and even after graduating, Radka often found herself pondering the similarities between thread and fine sterling wire. While working as a technical designer, she decided to try her hand at crocheting metal into jewelry. What started as an experiment blossomed into an art form. Radka makes each pendant and pair of earrings by hand, hook, and hammer in her Brooklyn, NY studio. Inspired by sea life, flowers and organic forms, Radka Designs have a natural, airy quality you wouldn’t expect from metal wire jewelry. Old world charm meets contemporary design in a collection both striking and elegant.

I've brought my experiences of traditional sewing, crochet and knitting with me to college where I earned a degree in fashion design. During my last semester, I took a jewelry class where I discovered the similarities between thread and fine silver wire. It was there that I first applied my knowledge of traditional craft to my studies of textile design and Radka Design came to life. Today the forged pieces have blossomed into a dynamic collection. It features groups of distinct shapes and dimensions, but all the work contains the intriguing unions of crochet and metal, lightness and strength. I make each piece in my Brooklyn studio by hand, hook and hammer.

I love this effect. I learned how to do it in the late 80's while taking a jewelry course. A guest jewelery artist showed us the technique and I was hooked (no pun intended).
