Nourish & Hydrate

Keeping hair colored requires a dedicated regime of salon visits and it isn’t cheap either. And still, those roots creep up in between appointments. Root Vanish will easily cover grey roots and nourish hair at the same time. Root Vanish was developed by celebrity colorist, Kazumi Morton. Nicknamed the “brunette master,” Kazumi has clients from New York City to Beverly Hills; she wanted to give them an all-natural, quality product to keep grey roots at bay between harsh colorings. Root Vanish is free of harmful chemicals and parabens. Its plant-based formula includes 22 Asian botanicals that leave hair hydrated and grey-free. With a few clicks gel infuses the brush tip, allowing you to evenly sweep color where it’s needed. Because the gel leaves no buildup, you can layer it multiple times to get that darker, in-between shade. Apply Root Vanish onto damp or dry hair and style as usual. It’s water-resistant and is unlikely to run with sweat or light rain, but washes out easily in the shower. Salons have been hesitant to carry Root Vanish, because it lets clients go longer between visits. Great for gents to touch up sideburns and facial hair, Root Vanish is ideal for both men and women who need to quickly hide that grey.

As a professional hair colorist, what do you see as the benefits of using Root Vanish?

  • Kazumi
    Kazumi
    6/5/2015 12:39 PM

Root Vanish not only provides instant grey coverage, it leaves a naturally soft, silky-smooth touch and finish that lasts throughout the day (and night!) until the next wash. Unlike other instant grey coverage products, the unique gel-formula developed by our research team in Japan, does not dry the hair, transfer throughout the day or leave any crusty clumpy residue – you will forget that it is there.

Yet, the product washes out easily so you can stay loyal to your colorist without upping the frequency of your coloring appointments. It is also packed with 22 nourishing botanical extract and oils known to support healthy hair growth and conditions the hair so users will find that their hair actually feels and looks more youthful and healthier with use.

What was the inspiration behind Root Vanish?

  • Kazumi
    Kazumi
    6/5/2015 12:46 PM

I’ve loved working with hair since I was young and have been fascinated with colors since watching my father work as a kimono pattern designer. Hair coloring seemed like a natural career path and while I worked hard to achieve the skills that I have now, there is a part that comes innately.

I was inspired to develop Root Vanish because I saw a clear need in the marketplace for temporary roots and gray touch-up products that provided natural, flawless coverage without the hassles of flaking, transferring and drying of the hair. My clients kept asking me for a better solution than what was currently available and I set out to find and create the ultimate product that my clients would love using. I love making people happy and feel honored to be able to help them feel and look more beautiful with a product that is so simple to use and yet so beneficial for the hair.

What has been biggest takeaway for you throughout this experience?

  • Kazumi
    Kazumi
    6/5/2015 12:55 PM

While I love and appreciate gorgeously colored and styled hair, at the end of the day, hair is hair. As with makeup, fashion, or staying in good shape, it can be a weapon to face the outside world, BUT it also depends on how that particular person perceives the value of her hair in terms of her larger identity.

She can be just as beautiful with or without colored or styled hair, as with makeup or clothes, as long as the beauty from within shines through that's what's most important. I’ve come across many women who look stunning with their grey hair and if they can confidently wear their hair as such, I think that looks even more beautiful in totality.

How long does 1 coloring brush last?

  • Emi
    Emi
    6/8/2015 12:34 PM

@Christinia Hi Christina! About 2 - 2.5 months depending on how frequently you use it. Each brush has 100 "pumps" or clicks and you only really need about 2 to 3 clicks to cover your hair part line and face line. Also, the product is to hold you over in between your coloring appointments or coloring at home so it depends on the frequency of your coloring as well as how quickly your roots grow out. There is an indicator window on the side of the tube that will let you know how much left you have to go as you are using it so that you don't suddenly run out.

  • Pushpa
    Pushpa
    6/8/2015 1:31 PM

@Emi Can the pump be refilled once empty? For that price I would like to be able to refill at a lower cost instead of having to pay $48 every time.

  • Emi
    Emi
    6/8/2015 4:51 PM

@Pushpa Hi! Thank you for your query. Because the applicator brush and bottle is a unique air pressurized system to prevent leakage even when flying and also protect the naturals-based formula from bacteria, the pump can not be refilled. However, as per my response to Portia below, depending on your usage frequency and also what may be considered valuable in a hair product, we hope that the formulation and user experience will be well worth the investment!

  • Emi
    Emi
    6/8/2015 12:42 PM

@Rodney Hi Rodney, thank you for your question. Men actually love Root Vanish for its very natural looking coverage and that you can't feel it once dry. You'll forget that it is there. Once dry, the product will not budge until you wash it out with water and soap. Even a little moisture will not make it bleed or rub onto fingers. I wouldn't recommend going swimming with it but for daily use - including drinking and eating or humidity, it is perfect. Also, the product is based on 22 botanical ingredients, has no fragrance, no parabens, silicone, any ingredients known to be harmful to your health and is very gentle even on sensitive skin so you don't need to worry. That said, always do a patch test. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur if they are allergic to any of the botanical extracts we employ. Always good to make sure!

I need something like this for my "sideburns," which are always the first part of my hair to grow out gray. But $50 is way too much for a quick touchup!

  • Emi
    Emi
    6/8/2015 12:53 PM

@Portia Hi Portia, yes, $48 is relatively a lot to invest into a roots / grey touch up product. Our pricing is as such because of Root Vanish's unique botanicals based formulation, high quality hair treating ingredients, the pressurized applicator brush container that prevents spread of bacteria and also keeps the natural formulation stable and spill proof (even when traveling) are more costly to produce. The actual cost of the product formulation and applicator is high -- but we did not want to compromise that.

Also, each click or pump goes a long way. If you are just covering up a few grays as they grow out, you should only need 1 or at most 2 pumps to cover the area per use. There are 100 clicks in each container so that is 50 - 100 applications. It is also easy, quick and once dry, will not drip down your face until you wash it off -- it should not come off on your pillow case either, depending on perspiration levels.

I hope I answered your question thoroughly but if you need more information, please do ask away!

  • Emi
    Emi
    6/8/2015 1:04 PM

@nancy Hi Nancy, yes, $48 is relatively high but we do have very good reason for the pricing! Root Vanish is not just a cover up product but also a very gentle, botanicals based hair treatment that won't dry our your scalp, roots and hair as powder based products on the market do -- and instead hydrates it so that your hair and even your next color will look better, healthier and more youthful. We don't include any ingredients that are irritable to your scalp and skin, no fragrance, no parabens, no silicone, etc. We want to make your hair healthier as you wait for your next coloring appointment rather than dry it up -- especially as greys are more coarse and weaker than the typical hair.

Also, the pressurized pump applicator with the built in brush is quite the complicated system that allows users to apply the unique gel-formula easily and with control and also prevents spillage in bags as well as keep the formula fresh, bacteria free and air tight so no drying. There are also natural anti-bacterial ingredients in the formula so no need to wipe off the brush after each time's use.

You can also read about the number of applications you can expect in my comments to Christina and Portia :) Thank you!!

  • Emi
    Emi
    6/8/2015 2:17 PM

@Donna Hi Donna, while our product is transfer proof once dry and based on natural ingredients -- and moreover gentle even on the most sensitive skin types, we can not recommend the use of the product on eye brows due to its close proximity to the eyes.

While I do not have the legitimate authority to recommend this, I have found that mascaras (for lashes) are a good option to cover eyebrow greys. They are more precise and easy to apply for such a specific area, formulated so that it is safe around the eye area and does not come off throughout the day. Go for a slightly darker shade than your hair color to best balance your face :)

I have several questions to ask you.

    1) Is the product cruelty-free…not tested on animals?

    2) I have a lot of white…not gray hair… will your product cover the white hair?

    3) I have very light blond hair…will your blond color work with my light blond hair?

    4) Once you apply the product, how long does it last on your hair? EX: A couple of hours or until you wash it out?

    5) Can you exercise with it on without it dripping/running?

    6) When you sleep…will the product transfer to your pillowcase?

    Thank you.

  • Emi
    Emi
    6/8/2015 3:51 PM

@celina Hi Celina, I am impressed to see how discerning you are when choosing your products. I hope my below answers will help in your choosing the right touch up product with confidence.

    1. Our product is cruelty-free and not tested on animals.

    2. Our products will cover white hair as well as grays.

    3. Our blonde color is a medium blonde and while you can adjust the shade by only using one layer or a couple of brush strokes over each section to deepen the shade, if your hair is platinum blonde or whitish blonde, I am afraid the blonde shade will be too dark for you. This also depends on your natural hair color. If your regrowth is a medium blonde but you dye your hair a lighter blonde, the color will blend right in with your natural medium blonde hair -- however, if you are a natural very light blonde, it will look too dark. We hope that we will be able to offer a very light blonde shade in the future!

    4. Once you apply the product and it has dried (TIP: using a blow drier is better as it will help set the color onto the hair more quickly and thoroughly) the product will not transfer or budge until your next shampoo. Even if you rub your fingers or restyle your hair throughout the day. Because there is no residue, there is nothing to fall off or rub off. Even if you do not wash your hair every night, it does not usually come off onto your pillow case -- although this does depend on perspiration and high temperatures.

    5. Although we have not done any clinical testing to prove this, we can say that we have gone to spinning class in LA with it and did not experience any dripping throughout the session or after. Officially speaking, this depends on the strenuousness of the exercise and the varying natural composition of the perspiration as well.

    6. Went ahead of myself and answered this in question 4! The quick answer is, as long as the hair is dry and stays dry, it will not rub off onto the pillowcase.

Please feel free to ask more - these are fantastic questions.

    Thank you!

We have had both African American women on whom the product worked very well and instantly, as well as those whose hair routine just wasn't an easy fit with the line. I'm not sure if I properly answered your question but please do comment on my comment if I can provide you with more information that may be helpful in making your decision.

    6/8/2015 4:55 PM

@Debra Hi Debra, yes, we do agree that it is relatively expensive compared to all of the other root touch up products that are available on the market but we have our reasons and benefits that the others can not even compare with. Please see my response to Nancy and Portia above -- as well as how it is different in terms of aesthetic and wearability in response to Celina. Please feel free to ask me about any specifics that you feel may not justify the price :) We hope that you will try the product sometime in the future and feel and see the difference of Root Vanish.

  • Emi
    Emi
    6/8/2015 5:58 PM

@Lauri Hi Lauri, thank you so much for your kind words and expressing your interest in the product. Yes, the pricing is high but the value relatively to various items on the market is also great as it provides a completely different finish, look and treatment that no other products can even compare. I've highlighted some cool differentiators and reasons why our product is inevitably more expensive but of better value than other root touch up options in my responses to Portia, Nancy and Celina above -- which includes the 22 botanicals that treat your hair while covering up grays, rather than drying out your hair and scalp; the special application system to maintain the integrity of the product; and the longevity of this product depending on frequency of use.

However, we understand that ultimately, it really does boil down to what you are looking for from a root touch up or treatment product -- and whether the cost justifies how much you save by being able to elongate the time in between your appointments at the salon.

Thank you for writing in - we truly appreciate the encouragement!

I would absolutely purchase this product, and it sounds like many others would too, if it wasn't priced so high. Most beauty products advertised on TV and infomercials price their items at around $29.95. I can buy a lot of Nice 'n Easy root touch-up for $48. Someone else will come out with a comparable for less.

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    6/9/2015 9:23 AM

Hi Linda, Root Vanish goes far beyond the products you see on infomercials.

It is a cover up product, but it is also a gentle, botanical-based hair treatment that won't dry your scalp, roots, or hair as many powder-based products on the market do. It hydrates your hair giving your next color a fuller, healthier, and more youthful look. There are also no ingredients that would irritate your scalp or skin.

And then there is the pressurized pump applicator with the built-in brush that provides easy application and precision control to prevent spillage. Finally, you can expect anywhere between 50-100 uses out of it.

So, yes, it is more expensive than the "as seen on TV" products, but there are good reasons why.

Root Vanish

Plant-Derived Grey Hair Solution

Nourish & Hydrate

Keeping hair colored requires a dedicated regime of salon visits and it isn’t cheap either. And still, those roots creep up in between appointments. Root Vanish will easily cover grey roots and nourish hair at the same time.

Root Vanish was developed by celebrity colorist, Kazumi Morton. Nicknamed the “brunette master,” Kazumi
has clients from New York City to Beverly Hills; she wanted to give them an all-natural, quality product to keep grey roots at bay between harsh colorings.

What was the inspiration behind Root Vanish?

  • Kazumi

  • Kazumi

  • Emi

  • Emi

    Thank you.

    Thank you!

@Liana Hi Liana, the product works well on all types of hair that is recently washed hair that is not oily and does not have product in it (you can apply product after to style once it is dry).
