Watches for a Cause

A Time to Give

1Face makes watches for a cause. Okay, several causes, with a different color for each one. Choose the color that reflects the cause most important to you. These watches can help build wells, feed children, provide treatment to AIDS and cancer patients, find loving homes for animals and more.

These are just some of the issues
that hit home with Fam Mirza, a creative director at a Chicago ad agency and someone who has spent significant time in the developing world. 1Face is Fam’s effort to help close the gap between the world’s haves and have-nots.

Along with these great causes comes some great-looking watches. Their minimalist design and bold colored bands make them a statement (time) piece. The time is displayed in spirited, old school digital type, behind a reflective face of tempered glass. The mirrored effect is there to remind you that you’re making a difference in the world.

We hope that people see that every action can help someone in need. That each person has the power to help someone in need. With 1:Face you have the options to help people in a multitude of dire situations.

@Ralphie If I understand correctly you are not going to give any percentage of the cost to the 'cause' of the watch.

Rather you hopefully anticipate people to ask someone wearing it about the watch and then do something to help animals.

That's not going to happen. And you get to keep all the money. The animals and all the other causes lose.

    Not a good idea.

And then because you weren't clever enough to come up with your own name for it, you copied Apple and figure you'll get some attention if not business by using a name that sounds like something Apple would do.

Did you think no one would notice?

    Loser company, highly unethical.

  • Mike

    10/1/2015 6:14 PM

Hi Sophia, oh boy, you do not understand this correctly. Just to address the last part real quick: GREAT COMPANY, HIGHLY ETHICAL. On to the rest...

We said in the video and Ralphie mentioned multiple times on the board here that about 25% of all sales go to the cause that you choose to support. That's what makes this such a GREAT idea. You are supporting, fashionably and financially, a cause that means something to you.

And because this is called 1Face not iFace, there is zero duplication of Apple. I guess they are both watches, but Apple doesn't own digital watches.

Thanks for taking the time to comment, but please read our stories and watch our videos. Not only do we put a lot of time into them, they help avoid serious misinterpretations like this.

To create a touchscreen watch is tough enough, but to build a charity juggernaut around it seems far tougher. What was the inspiration behind this business?

  • Ralphie

@Mike 1:Face was inspired by our founder's deep connection with his upbringing in Qatar and his desire to do something that can impact the world.

@Mike I would love to see a watch for Multiple Sclerosis awareness and/or research. It's one chronic disease I don't think gets enough recognition. I know all my friends and family would buy one and so would everyone in my online group. I think this is a great think you're doing. I know there are so many causes out there that need help. Thanks.

I would love to see a rainbow-striped one supporting LGBTQ homeless teens - I would buy at least 5! Another charity idea would be one supporting child abuse prevention. Although I don't know why I'm suggesting more when I'm having trouble deciding on which ones I want right now in the first place...these watches are awesome!!!

Can you provide a list of the charities supported for each cause? I like these ideas, just worry a bit at the vague nature of some of the statistics provided. For example, what sorts of educational opportunities? Improved the living environment in what way(s)?

I'm happy to see how positively people are responding to this concept and would love to learn more about what's done with the donations. Thank you.

  • Ralphie
    Ralphie – Special Guest
    10/1/2015 2:13 PM

@ruth Hi Ruth. Our partners for each cause are as follows:

    Cancer-American Cancer Society

    Breast Cancer-National Breast Cancer Foundation

    AIDS-Keep A Child Alive

    Education-Pencils of Promise

    Water-Gram Vikas

    Environment-The Adventure Project

    Hunger-Faces of Change

Educational Opportunities equals providing supplies and portions of scholarships for the students served in Pencils of Promise schools.

Living environment equals providing charcoal efficient stoves that allow those in Haiti and Kenya to cook using these stoves as opposed to cooking over an open fire which releases toxins into the air that cause life threatening respiratory issues.

@Ralphie How long does the battery last and what kind of battery does it use? I love the concept and would love to get one. I just need a tad more functionality in a watch and would be willing to pay at least $20 more for an activity tracker. I can't just wear a watch for time anymore. Perhaps you can make an "any cause" watch that people direct toward the cause of choice. I like to support Doctors Without Borders.

@Lisa That's a good idea. Doctors without Borders is a wonderful cause that is doing some great work. Adding more features is coming to 1Face in the future.

  • Tom

Another good cause would be manufacturing these somewhere other than China.

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    10/1/2015 3:08 PM

Tom, it's tough to group the causes 1Face is supporting with its manufacturing location. In fact, it's borderline impossible. I suppose the one similarity is that they are both business decisions. And if that is the case, I'd think the decision to donate a percentage of sales to causes like breast cancer or hunger around the world would trump all others.

  • Ralphie
    Ralphie – Special Guest
    10/1/2015 3:23 PM

@Tom As @Mike mentioned, our main goal is help those in dire need of assistance and that is the essence to every decision we make.

  • Ef

@Ralphie The illustrations appear to be dimensionally identical. What are the dimensions? Is each watch really 1/4 pounds in weight? Does the face info illuminate? What is the warranty?

These are reasonable questions when considering the purchase of something that cannot be physically handled before purchase.

    Please reply. Thank you.

  • Mike
    Mike – Grommet Team
    10/1/2015 4:32 PM

Hi Ef, going right down the line: All the watches are the same size. The face of the watch is 1.62" x 1.62" and the band is 24 cm. Each watch is 2.4 oz. The face illuminates the time. And there is a three month warranty if the watch is broken or defective from the manufacturer.

  • Ralphie
    Ralphie – Special Guest
    10/1/2015 4:39 PM

@Ef Hi. The dimensions of the case are 4.1 x 3.9cm; thickness 1cm. Watch weighs 2.4oz. The face illuminates when the buttons are pressed. And there is a one-year warranty. `

Hi. I have this year, become a Foster parent. This is a growing need in our country.

My 2 are family members of mine. I am so happy to be there new Mom. (sadly) It would be great if you could do something for Foster Children.. I tell you this. I am so much more informed of just how many children are in need of someone to love and care for them.. There is a need being fulfilled for them, so they don't have to go to a Foster home with only a few belongings in a black trash bag. The color of these new bags is, (being hand decorated) royal blue. Just an idea.. Thanks for all your awesome work you are already doing!
