Barebones Living

Garden Tools

Built Tough

Barebones Living believes in building quality gardening tools, and their durable gear—like a spade, hoe, and the multi-functional Ultimate Tool—can easily handle digging in the dirt and many more tough jobs.

Founder Robert Workman applies the Shaker philosophy (creating things that are equal parts necessary, useful, and
beautiful) to his well-made tools. His designs have a minimal-but-functional feel, and are made with strong, long-lasting materials like tempered stainless steel and bamboo to handily dig, weed, till, and tackle other dirty jobs without wearing down.

Barebones Living was created to support Robert’s own non-profit. They now give back to marginalized people—from providing shelter after natural disasters to helping fund mobile medical clinics. For all the good these tools do in your garden, they’re also making a positive impact around the world.

Hi, I would like to know where these tools are manufactured, and what non-profit do the sales benefit?

Hey Victoria, all our tools are manufactured in China. Our founder created Barebones as a means to support Tifie Humanitarian. Tifie was set up to help those in need around the world, such as sending Barebones Shelters to Nepal after their earthquake, or most recently sending Shelters and other supplies to Colombia and Peru after the flooding.

I see no real incentive to buying all 3 tools , other than the 'gift box', which of course gets thrown away. Any future movement on a bundling price ? Say , all 3 for $50 or $55.00 ?

That's a great question, at the moment there isn't, except for the gift box. Which isn't always thrown away. Some people use the gift box to create a grow box for a window seal or something. But as for buying all 3 in a bundle we don't have that option yet.

I need a very strong spade. Ones I have bought from big box stores end up bending when I dig in my heavy clay soil. Is there any guarantee with this spade?

Great question, that is an issue with a lot of spades out there, but our spade is heat treated stainless steel so it doesn't bend easily. We do offer a lifetime warranty on our spades just in case, but we haven't had issues with them bending.

I am left-handed and many times I have difficulties using garden tools designed for right-handers, the blades in weeders curve the wrong way. I have to switch some tools to my right hand, something many left handed people automatically do and we do become adept in using the tools. Ergonomic means little to us. Are these tools able to function with both Right and Left hands equally?

Great question, all our tools are designed so that you can use them with either hand with comfort.
