    @Brenda Thank you! You can use fresh, bottled or citric acid (apple cider vinegar works too or you can use in tomato sauce/soup). The water just needs to be sightly acidified so if using citrus add only 2-3 drops for the best results.

    Hi, I drink tea every day and would love it - but I add milk - not lemon. I fear that milk and lemon would curdle. Also, how much citrus (or acid) is needed in any dish to fully activate? Thanks,

    @Regina Hi Regina, you only need to add a couple of drops of lemon to the water, it shouldn't be enough to curdle the milk. You should not use Lucky Iron Fish with teas that contain caffeine - it inhibits iron release and absorption. Herbal teas that don't contain caffeine are fine.

    @Gavin GM, this is very interesting. I have Multiple Sclerosis and I had Gastric Bypass 6/2004, I have to get Iron infusions every other year due to my lack of. I know when I'm running low on fuel as my fatigue is draining. Not just your normal fatigue, it's constant and interferes with my daily living. Do you think this might help even just a little with my circumstances?

    Anne....I'm no physician but I was told by mine that once I went thru menopause (or women with a hysterectomy...no cycles) no iron supplements should be taken. You may want to give your Dr.

    Julie,

    I have Chron's and was nearly killed from bleeding internally. I too had to have iron treatments, because my intestinal track has trouble absorbing iron- you are not alone.

    You are lucky it is only once every other year! I had to have five treatments in 7 days! I was overloaded with iron at that point and it made me sick. But it does work of course, however it is a shotgun method- much better to get iron everyday in your food.

    I take iron supplements and they too are sort of a shotgun method- the body is not meant to be peppered with minerals like that, though it will work. I will be trying the Iron Fish and cut back on my supplements. Since I am tested often, I will know if it's working. Getting a reasonable amount of iron, already diluted in your food IS the natural way. (We cook in cast iron whenever we can.) I can't see how this would hurt you at all- the most you would be out is $25. (And you still help iron deficient families the world over.)

    DON'T stop taking your supplements until you speak with you Doc and get tested a few weeks after you get your fish. You should know at that point. Still, free iron floating in your food has got to be easier to absorb than a mass dose from supplements or injection- something we both need! From one chronic anemic to another, this is easier on the body than taking iron injections! (Ever notice how the injection looks like they are shooting rusty water into your arm? ESSENTIALLY THEY ARE! This is the natural way to get it- can't hurt to try.)

    How long does the iron in one of these little fish last?

    Also, when you say 75% of of MDR is added to food, how much is that, approximately?

    Finally, is there a risk of over-ironing food? (That can cause constipation and a few other ugly health items.)

    @Amy you asked all the questions I wanted to. I have LOW iron levels and have for years, I've tried iron supplement with calcium, but nothing works. Can't wait to see the response as I'm optimistic this fish might just help my low iron levels!

    @Amy Hi Amy, depending on your age, gender and health status, the Fish can provide a significant portion of your daily required iron intake. It is about 7 mg of bioavailable iron in 1L of water. With regular use, a Lucky Iron Fish lasts about 5 years. When the smile is gone - it is time to get a new one. There is no risk of over-ironing your food.

    This is an excellent idea and mission. But many men are the opposite of anemic and nutritionists and MD's warn of iron overdoses. For example, those men should avoid vitamin/mineral supplements that have iron -- some such supplements are specifically labeled "for men."

    @debby Hi Debby. We suggest that the Lucky Iron Fish should be cleaned with soap and water after each use (and when before you use it for the first time). We also sell a protection oil on our website that helps prolong the life of your fish. If your fish is not thoroughly dried it can rust. To remove any rust simply clean with some lemon juice or our protection oil.

    @Shelby Great question! The Lucky Iron Fish has gone through numerous clinical trials. I actually centered my PhD thesis on the Lucky Iron Fish as did another PhD candidate Dr. Chris Charles. All of our clinical work has been done with partner Universities in Canada, the United States, and Europe. All of our published clinical work is available on our webiste.     This sounds very helpful! I only make 12 0z cup of tea at a time, is it necessary to boil a whole liter of water for the fish or can I do just one cup and drop the fish in it for a few minutes before drinking? I really like the concept and the idea of helping the Cambodian peoples. I hope they use it too...

    @MaryAlice Hi There. For optimal use the Lucky Iron Fish needs to be boiled in 1L of acidified water. We would suggest that you boil 1L of water, store it in your fridge, and use that water throughout the day. Remember that caffeinated teas contain tannins which block iron absorption, so the Lucky Iron Fish would only work with herbal tea. I hope that helps

    Could you not get the same iron by cooking slightly acidic foods/drinks in cast iron cook wear? what is considered regular use? daily? weekly?

    @robin Hi Robin. Cooking in cast iron can add iron to your diet, but the levels released are inconsistent. This is due to multiple variables including cooking temperature, ingredients in the food, and the age of the cookware (older pans develop a shield that prevents the iron from being released). The Lucky Iron Fish was designed to release a consistent and safe amount of available iron with each use.

    Our studies looked at using the Lucky Iron Fish at least 3 times a week. However the more you use it, the more iron you are going to get. The Lucky Iron Fish releases 7mg of iron per use, so your usage should depend on how much you'd like to add to your diet per day or week

    Is it only supposed to be in there for ten minutes or can you keep it in there as long as you're cooking? And if there are tomatoes in the dish, there is no need for adding citrus, right?

    @Ashley Hi Ashley. If you leave the Lucky Iron Fish in your pot for longer than 10 minutes it can start to impact the taste of the food, so we suggest either removing it after 10mins or adding it for the last 10 mins of your cooking.

    And yes, tomatoes contain enough acid to do the same thing as citrus. Thanks for the question!

    @robin great question. Anything with tannins or phytates can prevent iron absorption. So using the Lucky Iron Fish with things like red wine, nuts, or potatoes should be avoided

    @robin Hi Robin. The oxidized iron would not be bioavailable so it would not be absorbed in the lining of your gut. Rust would also negatively impact the taste of the food or water, and we wouldn't want to ruin your meal!

    My kids have low iron due to our family diet (no to little red meat), so they take vitamins daily. My 10-year-old hates the vitamins, and we've been looking for another way to add iron, so this seems like a great option.

    If I wanted to use the Lucky Fish in the makings for a family meal, like soup, I'd want more than 7mg of iron for the whole family. Is there a formula for how to do this? For instance, if I'm using 2L of water, do I boil the fish for 20 minutes? 40 minutes for 4L?

Adding more water or cooking with the Lucky Iron Fish for longer than 10mins will release more iron, but not an amount that will be suitable for multiple people. My suggestion would be to use it in multiple ways. An example could be making fruit juice with iron infused water that can be consumed throughout the day, and using the fish for meals when you can.

    I realize this may not be practical for larger families, and we are working on a solution for this

    @Kathy Hi Kathy, the best way to add iron to your diet is by eating red meat. In many countries, both developing and developed, those living below the poverty line have difficulty affording nutritious food. In rural Cambodia most people live off of white rice and some small dried fish, which both have very little nutritional value. The Lucky Iron Fish is an inexpensive way of adding natural iron to your diet for 5 years.

    @Deborah Hi Deborah, the Lucky Iron Fish needs some sort of acidity, like citric acid, to help the iron be absorbed in the lining of the gut. Consuming alkaline water will actually prevent absorbing iron from any source (food or supplemental). We would suggest boiling non-alkaline water with some form of acidity (tomatoes, citrus, tamarind, any vinegar) with the Lucky Iron Fish to get the iron.

    @Ronnie Hi Ronnie. We have tested this, and though more iron is released, it is not by a multiplier of 2 so it would be difficult to estimate how much iron is being released. We have also found that using 2 or more fish greatly changes taste, smell, and colour of the food or water. Our suggestion would be to use the Lucky Iron Fish throughout the day (in drinking water) to maximize its usability. I Hope that helps

    @debby Hi Debby. We suggest that the Lucky Iron Fish should be cleaned with soap and water after each use (and when before you use it for the first time). We also sell a protection oil on our website that helps prolong the life of your fish. If your fish is not thoroughly dried it can rust. To remove any rust simply clean with some lemon juice or our protection oil.

    @Shelby Great question! The Lucky Iron Fish has gone through numerous clinical trials. I actually centered my PhD thesis on the Lucky Iron Fish as did another PhD candidate Dr. Chris Charles. All of our clinical work has been done with partner Universities in Canada, the United States, and Europe. All of our published clinical work is available on our webiste.     This sounds very helpful! I only make 12 0z cup of tea at a time, is it necessary to boil a whole liter of water for the fish or can I do just one cup and drop the fish in it for a few minutes before drinking? I really like the concept and the idea of helping the Cambodian peoples. I hope they use it too...

    @MaryAlice Hi There. For optimal use the Lucky Iron Fish needs to be boiled in 1L of acidified water. We would suggest that you boil 1L of water, store it in your fridge, and use that water throughout the day. Remember that caffeinated teas contain tannins which block iron absorption, so the Lucky Iron Fish would only work with herbal tea. I hope that helps

    Could you not get the same iron by cooking slightly acidic foods/drinks in cast iron cook wear? what is considered regular use? daily? weekly?

    @robin Hi Robin. Cooking in cast iron can add iron to your diet, but the levels released are inconsistent. This is due to multiple variables including cooking temperature, ingredients in the food, and the age of the cookware (older pans develop a shield that prevents the iron from being released). The Lucky Iron Fish was designed to release a consistent and safe amount of available iron with each use.

    Our studies looked at using the Lucky Iron Fish at least 3 times a week. However the more you use it, the more iron you are going to get. The Lucky Iron Fish releases 7mg of iron per use, so your usage should depend on how much you'd like to add to your diet per day or week

    Is it only supposed to be in there for ten minutes or can you keep it in there as long as you're cooking? And if there are tomatoes in the dish, there is no need for adding citrus, right?

    @Ashley Hi Ashley. If you leave the Lucky Iron Fish in your pot for longer than 10 minutes it can start to impact the taste of the food, so we suggest either removing it after 10mins or adding it for the last 10 mins of your cooking.

    And yes, tomatoes contain enough acid to do the same thing as citrus. Thanks for the question!

    @robin great question. Anything with tannins or phytates can prevent iron absorption. So using the Lucky Iron Fish with things like red wine, nuts, or potatoes should be avoided

    You recommend cleaning your fish if it gets a little rust. Is this necessary? Would not the oxidized iron just add more iron to what ever you making? Thank you for taking the time to answer all the questions.

    @robin Hi Robin. The oxidized iron would not be bioavailable so it would not be absorbed in the lining of your gut. Rust would also negatively impact the taste of the food or water, and we wouldn't want to ruin your meal!

    My kids have low iron due to our family diet (no to little red meat), so they take vitamins daily. My 10-year-old hates the vitamins, and we've been looking for another way to add iron, so this seems like a great option.

    If I wanted to use the Lucky Fish in the makings for a family meal, like soup, I'd want more than 7mg of iron for the whole family. Is there a formula for how to do this? For instance, if I'm using 2L of water, do I boil the fish for 20 minutes? 40 minutes for 4L?

    @Eric Hi Eric. Thanks for the question! Adding more water or cooking with the Lucky Iron Fish for longer than 10mins will release more iron, but not an amount that will be suitable for multiple people. My suggestion would be to use it in multiple ways. An example could be making fruit juice with iron infused water that can be consumed throughout the day, and using the fish for meals when you can.

    I realize this may not be practical for larger families, and we are working on a solution for this

    @Kathy Hi Kathy, the best way to add iron to your diet is by eating red meat. In many countries, both developing and developed, those living below the poverty line have difficulty affording nutritious food. In rural Cambodia most people live off of white rice and some small dried fish, which both have very little nutritional value. The Lucky Iron Fish is an inexpensive way of adding natural iron to your diet for 5 years.

    @Deborah Hi Deborah, the Lucky Iron Fish needs some sort of acidity, like citric acid, to help the iron be absorbed in the lining of the gut. Consuming alkaline water will actually prevent absorbing iron from any source (food or supplemental). We would suggest boiling non-alkaline water with some form of acidity (tomatoes, citrus, tamarind, any vinegar) with the Lucky Iron Fish to get the iron.

    @Ronnie Hi Ronnie. We have tested this, and though more iron is released, it is not by a multiplier of 2 so it would be difficult to estimate how much iron is being released. We have also found that using 2 or more fish greatly changes taste, smell, and colour of the food or water. Our suggestion would be to use the Lucky Iron Fish throughout the day (in drinking water) to maximize its usability. I Hope that helps

    The Lucky Iron Fish are made in Bowmanville Foundry in Ontario. They source ferrous iron (bioavailable) that is extensively tested to make sure that it is contaminant free and also test to ensure it has high purity value. They are ISO 9002 certified. Thanks for the question!
