Yoga by Numbers

Easy-to-Learn Yoga System

Anyone, Anywhere Yoga

Yoga by Numbers is a system on a mission: Make yoga accessible to everyone. Their approach starts with a mat that guides your alignment via pre-printed number targets. Made in the USA with the help of Jade Yoga, the mat has a non-slip, cushioned surface that’s durable, too.

To help you get on your mat, Yoga by Numbers offers a
whole suite of classes via a free app and YouTube channel. No need to stick to a studio’s schedule—you set your own. Choose from dozens of different yoga styles and ability levels. The app (for iPad) features free content, which will be continually refreshed with new classes and offerings.

Elizabeth Morrow had the idea for Yoga by Numbers after yoga helped her recover from a serious illness. After experiencing yoga’s health benefits firsthand, Elizabeth wanted to make it accessible to everyone and anyone.

Her self-guided system is designed so that whatever your ability or availability, you’ll feel empowered to practice.

Hi -- I'm Elizabeth, and I developed Yoga by Numbers to make yoga more accessible for everyone. I'm on a mission to help people realize the benefits of yoga and to go at their own pace while they learn. It doesn't have to be intimidating or difficult to learn yoga poses, and they have long lasting benefits for your health and well-being. I'm happy to answer your questions about it.

Hey there, everyone! Welcome back, Elizabeth and Yoga by Numbers! You can hear her entire story and further info about the app in the Meet the Maker podcast below:

Great idea, but a bit pricey.

@Jane my thoughts exactly. I was so excited to see this, as I've health issues, and wouldn't survive an actual yoga class! However, this is a bit steep for me as well. Lovely idea, though. Kudos for a lovely, American made product!

Hi @Jane, thanks for your comment. We understand it is more expensive than mats you can buy at discount chains, but maybe I can shed some light on why it is still a great value.

The price of our mat reflects a number of characteristics that make it different from other mats:

    1. Our mat is 25% larger than standard mats to accommodate all bodies and even balance aids. Standard mats are 24" wide by 68" long, whereas ours are 30" wide by 72" long.

    2. Our mats are made in the USA of environmentally sustainable natural rubber, with no PVCs or petrochemicals. This of course makes the cost higher than companies like Lululemon, which use petrochemicals and offshore factories, and have low labor standards.

    3. Our mats come with a free video instruction manual, our DVD "10 Sessions to Yoga", which teaches the mechanics of 30 poses. We also have a free iPad app, with free full-length classes, meditations, and learning materials, as well as a YouTube channel with additional class content. When you think about the price of going to a studio, or even paying for DVDs, our system allows a user who practices yoga even just twice a week to save as much as $1000 over the course of a year.

We definitely understand the price will be out of reach for some people, but we are also positive the system is still a cost-saver overall, and we are incredibly proud that it reflects our values of responsible manufacturing, environmental responsibility, and inclusivity for all bodies. Thanks for the opportunity to explain, @Jane.

Hi @Emmie, we just posted some details in response to @Jane's comment, and hope you'll check it out too. I began yoga because of health issues, and it has helped me tremendously. I absolutely understood looking at the cost of the mat compared to only other mats, but if you take a minute to check out our app content and You Tube content, I think you will see how it all adds up! You can download our free app in the Apple Store and find our YouTube channel here.

Hi Regina, check out Elizabeth's rationale for the price above. A lot goes into creating these mats and this one of our products with the most value tags!

When do you think you'll have an android app? Would love to request this for a holiday gift, but not if it's only available through apple products. Also, what is "premium" content and how much more would that cost (per month, per purchase, etc.)?

  • Elizabeth
    10/23/2015 11:32 AM

Hi @Tori! Thanks for your question. I would love to be able to give you a date on an android version, but the truth is that we are a small, bootstrapping social enterprise, so we will do it as soon as we can afford it. We hope within a period of months. You can sign up to be notified when it is out on our website. In the meantime, we are putting content on our YouTube channel so that people can access it without an iPad. You can find our YouTube channel.

As for premium content, we are offering a 31-day challenge, New Year, New Habits, for the month of January that will include daily premium content, yoga classes, meditation exercises, nutrition assistance, and tools to help you develop a year long program for health and wellness. The challenge will cost $29.99 for all materials and classes. You can read more about the challenge on our website!

Future premium content will be similar to how you might purchase a song in iTunes: you will pay for it once and then own it forever. Classes will be $6.99, $8.99, and $10.99 depending on length. The app will always include free content, and we will always post content on YouTube as well. The advantage to the app is that it allows you to customize content, track your progress, schedule classes, and filter searches, but we are committed to making sure free content is always available. Thanks for your question!

If you buy a class, will you get a special link to the You Tube page? I do not own an iPad.

@T thanks for your question! Yes, you will receive the YouTube channel link without any additional cost. The YouTube channel classes are available to anyone with a mat, no extra purchase required. Let me know if you have any other questions!

This sounds like a great product and I would like to order it but can't. Something is wrong with the site. When I try to place my order, it tells me to add my name to the billing info but there is not place to add it.

@Guest I'm sorry to hear that! The Grommet team is working on it now!

Hi Guest, if that is your real name.....That is odd. I would try logging in with your account, or creating one if you don't have one. You shouldn't have trouble either way, but this should eliminate any issues.

OK, I will give that a try.

What an awesome idea...and the price is a little higher than other mats, but when you think of the cost of instruction, it should be worth it. I've had back injuries and went to regular classes at the YMCA that had an awesome instructor that would take the time to work with me during the class - not all instructors do that. I've also had some private instruction and that can get expensive really fast. Not that I've moved it is harder to get to the classes. Even though I have lots of tapes and DVDs not having your hand and foot placement just right is the difference between a good stretch and possibly getting hurt. I can't wait to get it and try it out!

@Denise we are so excited to have you try it out. Please reach out and let us know how it works for you, and if there is anything we can do to help you customize your experience. We hope you see a difference in your back pain very quickly. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
