Paw Patrol

Tired of dirty, wet paw prints all over your house? Joanna Rein remembers feeling that way. Despite stockpiling rags and towels by the backdoor, her four young kids could never tackle their dog Buddy’s wet paws when he came in from the yard. She wanted an easy way to clean and dry Buddy without creating a huge mess, and she was inspired by two things: the tiny chamois towel she saw a swimmer using at a swim meet, and the soft, dangling brushes in a car wash. It took some experimentation (and help from a patient tailor) before Joanna perfected a simple, practical solution for wet paws that even Buddy likes using. The secret is in the “noodles,” the textured strands of microfiber chenille that are woven together to create Joanna’s Soggy Doggy Doormat and Soggy Doggy Super Shammy. These shaggy textiles soak up water and trap dirt like a sponge. And they really work. The doormat can absorb 5 times more water than a regular cotton doormat, and it easily doubles as a crate pad, car mat or couch cover. The Super Shammy—which has hand pockets so you can get a firm grip when you’re toweling off your pooch—can hold up to seven times its weight in water. Dogs love the softness, while we love the durability (just toss in the washer and dryer). It’s the best reward for a wet romp.

My name is Joanna Rein and I’m the founder and “Top Dog” at Soggy Doggy Productions. I created the Soggy Doggy Doormat last year because I was fed up with wet, sloppy paw mess. No matter how many towels and doormats I left by the backdoor, there was still paw muck all over the clean floors. I looked everywhere for a good solution, and when I couldn’t find one, I decided to make my own.

It took a few tries to find a superabsorbent material acceptable to Buddy (our Chief Product Tester). He loves his Soggy Doggy Doormat because it’s so velvety-soft. I love the way it sucks water and dirt right off his paws as he walks in the door. But no one loves the Soggy Doggy more than my four kids (now they don’t get yelled at to wipe down the dog and clean up the mess!)

Our award-winning Soggy Doggy Super Shammy was inspired by last winter’s endless East coast snow and rain. Snow-day walks leave wet doggy bellies that the doormat doesn’t dry. The convenient hand pockets on the Super Shammy make it easy to dry off soaking underbellies (and ears and noses too!)

I always love talking to fellow dog owners and hearing their ideas and comments, so please write-in with your questions or suggestions!

    The Super Shammy is 31" x 14"

Just got the product and love it! It's really terrific.

BUT I would like to ask if you can somehow come up with a version that's "green" - as in eco=friendly. I'm an environmental journalist and wanted to write about this but it doesn't fit my criteria. I'm so-o disappointed!

If and when you do create a green version, please let me know!

    Thanks so much.

Just received our soggy doggy mat and shammy - the dogs love it. Have it at the side door. Would love to have it at the front door too if the design were slightly more formal (solid color without the bone). Thanks for finding this great product!

Have been using the mat and shammy in the mountains of Colorado. The door mat is great, and has made a huge difference in keeping dirt from tracking in to the house -- from humans and canines alike! The shammy I have found to be on the small size -- and I have a small dog. I don't think it would work as well for larger dogs -- at least the way I tend to use materials when drying off dogs. It works great with the snow, and helping to remove the "snowballs" that form on my dog's fur -- but I found it a bit less absorbent than expecting when I gave him a bath, and found I had to use both a regular towel and the shammy to get him completely dry.

So 5 stars for the doormat and 3 stars for the shammy -- which would get a higher rating if it were bigger! So I hope the product is made in a larger size soon!

We describe the Super Shammy as "One Size Dries All" because the noodles are so absorbent, they really do soak up everything -- from a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Yorkie!

    Hi Joanna,

Do you have a website? I'm a Blogger and K9 product tester, and would like to write about your products. As a mom to two large dogs, I agree w/ the other comments that a larger shammy would be most helpful.

Do you plan to attend Super Zoo/Las Vegas?

    Thanks so much, Shelly

Couldn't tell in the video, what is the backing......have hardwood floors and I don't like to use anything with a rubber backing. Will you be making these in different sizes in the near future? I have double french doors and am looking for a something long enough to cover both doors and come out far enough for 2 labs to lay on by the door....kind of like a small area rug rather than just a mat.

    Hi Donna -

The backing on the Soggy Doggys is an SEBS spray -- it's a synthetic rubber (not latex) and it does not damage hard wood floors. We have them all over our house without issue.

We do make the Soggy Doggy in an XL 3x5' version -- it's HUGE! It's available on our website (www.soggydoggydoormat.com) in beige and dark chocolate. And a caramel XL doormat will be available at the end of August.

    Hope that helps!
