I love it!

It holds everything that I need to carry! The workmanship is top notch.

Beautiful bag!

This is a very nice bag! It isn't super stiff so it will fold for travel, and is great for the beach or to keep in the car for carrying merchandise! It's a very pretty alternative to reusable bags. And I love the back story!More > < Less

Sent cross-country for the holiday, but I think it'll carry a lot of wait. ;- )

I am delighted with this bag. It is excellent for a grocery shopping bag, a water aerobics bag, a hauling to the car bag and more. It is well made uses recycled material and supports family jobs. I've had questions from friends on how they can get one. I anticipate purchasing more for gifts.More > < Less

I use this for grocery shopping mainly, I bought two of them pink and blue, I gave the blue as a gift and we both love them. Lots of compliments on it.More > < Less

About Swahili African Modern

Fill With Purpose

If you’re on your way to the beach or grocery store, grab a tote from Swahili African Modern. These durable, upcycled bags are made by African artisans who are paid a fair wage.

Founder Leslie Mittelberg lived in Kenya over twenty years ago, where she was captivated by local crafts and art. To widen their market, she created Swahili African Modern, whose Fair Trade practices ensure fair pay to improve artisans’ lives.

Swahili’s totes are made with leftover material from Senegalese prayer mats, which are factory-woven from strands of bright, durable plastic. Widely used in Africa, these mats let families sit and have a meal or work on their crafts. The UN has even used them for refugee sleeping mats.

The extra material from the factory is hand-stitched into colorful totes by Swahili’s skilled craft workers. Fill one up at the farmer’s market, and feel good knowing it benefits African artisans and their families.
