Sensor Bag Light

Reach & See

Rummaging around blindly for something in your bag or backpack is a thing of the past. Say hello to SOI.

SOI is the world’s first automatic bag light. Put it in your purse, briefcase, or backpack and, when you reach in to grab something, SOI instantly lights up. This little disc has detection technology that recognizes when a hand is nearby and turns on. Then it automatically shuts off a few moments after you remove your hand.

Founders Christian Schech and Bastian Wetzel came up with the idea for SOI during a power
failure at a folk festival. They looked around at all the women using cigarette lighters or cell phones to look inside their bags, and knew there had to be a better way.

SOI weighs less than 1.5 ounces and is easy to transfer from bag to bag. It’s hands-free, energy efficient, and sustainably produced—nearly all of the materials used to make SOI are 100% recyclable. After 3,000 or so cycles, just replace the batteries.

Save yourself time and hassle, and let SOI make your life a little easier (and a little brighter).

    If you carry a deep bag then you likely know the feeling of rummaging around inside of it to find what you need. The SOI Light senses your hand, and gives light to the darkness inside your purse or briefcase.

    Why is this something everyone should have with them?

    SOI lights up at the touch of your hand, so that you can see the contents inside your bag. How is it working? Touching the light will illuminate it for a short period. A very energy efficient sensor and LED Technology allows multiple thousands of illuminations. The AAA batteries can be exchanged. You do not have to find buttons to switch on the light, it illuminates by searching. It is the best search engine for your purse.

    @Rupprecht Are the batteries replaceable, or is the SOI completely sealed so that once the batteries die, it's no longer useable? Thanks; it sounds great!

    Hi Aline, yes they are! The SOI twists open for easy replacement of the two AAA batteries.

    This sounds like a much needed addition to my handbag. How does the SOI light distinguish between my hand and all the stuff jostling around in my bag? Seems like it would stay on all the time.

    @Terri Hi Terri,

    the sensor is sensing electrical fields from the hand moving in the bag. The automatic calibration Software filters unexpected events. So the other stuff in the bag from Mobile phone to lippsticks is not starting it. In case of irregular sensing, don't mind the light is off after a few seconds.

    In Germany we sold above 100k after Launch so we have a clear Feedback from users, It works perfect, it lasts more then a year with one set of batteries.

    What kind of batteries? The details page says 2 AAA but the video seems to show the disc style.

    Hi Leslie,

    the product has 2 AAA batteries. The reason is - AAA is easy to get and also the capacity is 4 times higher to coin cell.

    It's painful for me to see this product because 18 years ago I had this idea and even documented it by writing it down and mailing it to myself and having a neighbor as a witness. I had no money to follow through with idea and at that time was gravely ill. Congratulations to the Men who were able to Fund and Develop this Product.

    sorry Amber,

    the idea came from the 2 Inventors, I found the idea great and designed it to cost. So we could get a patent on it. Yes I invested. If you have another idea - whish is great - come tell me.

    Keep innovative!!!!!

    @Amber - Documenting an idea by writing it down and mailing it to yourself is pointless. If you want to develop a product and bring it to market (something I'm working on myself right now) there are several good books about the REAL process involved - check Amazon or your favorite bookseller.

    It sounds like Amber was dealing with a sans-Amazon environment, Anita. Thanks for the tip though. Hopefully, you can help someone here on the board get to the other side of the board!

    What is on the reverse side? Could velcro be stuck to the back to secure it to the side of a compartment?

    Hi Laurence,

    the SOI is shining in all directions, front and back side. It is designed for style and usage. So it is really a nice touch and feel product. You do not need Velcro to attach. The idea was it should light up by searching with your Hands in the deep of the bag. But if you like to stick it on Vecro, it will of course work too, but it is not necessary.

    Does it get scratched easily being in bag?

    @Donna Jean

    Hi Donna,

    the material we are using for SOI is Polycarbonat, this material is also used in cars for front light. So it is best for robustness. I would not say - no chance to make scratches, but even in havy duty Environment in a Handbag between sand from the beach and knifes, it might get a little roughened, but as the light comes from the inner side, you will probably not see it.

    What a great idea! I'm so tired of looking for specific items in my bag. I have a friend who can never find her keys in her bag and it's become short of an "I Love Lucy" episode! Great idea!

    Hi Liz,

    Thanks for your comment.

    By the way, out of the bag you can use SOI also as night light. You do not have to search for a switch . I use it in hotels, as it is enough to move the hand in direction SOI to get enough orientation in the room.

    Hey there Mickie, it may seem high at first, but when you consider SOI will work thousands of times on two AAA batteries AND those batteries can be replaced, the lifetime value quickly adds up!
