The Sphinx

Personal Lounger

Lounge Away

When you daydream about lounging around at the pool, beach or park, the idea is often more comfortable than reality. But with Melissa Ortega’s lightweight inflatable lounger, you’re just 12 breaths away from total ergonomic comfort.

Melissa’s Sphinx lounger comes in two pieces. The first is for your upper body. You can lay on your back or your stomach, and the Sphinx lounger perfectly cradles your neck and head. There’s even a chin dip for when you’re lying face down, so you don’t stress your neck.

The second piece
is a multifunctional media holder that props up your book, magazine or e-reader. It has an internal compartment that you can fill with ice and drinks to use it as a cooler. Or, it will hold your keys, sunglasses and wallet if you want to keep the sand away from your personal items. The media holder also doubles as a bolster to support your knees.

A massage therapist, Melissa knows all about the importance of ergonomics. She originally designed the Sphinx for reading, but found it works great as a pool lounger, too. And the critics agree: When Melissa duct-taped her original design and took it to an inventor’s convention, she won an award for her innovative creation.

Hi Everyone! It’s Summer! I don’t know about you but when it gets nice outside that is where I want to be. Like many of you some of my favorite places to lounge about, relax, read a book or sunbathe are near the water, the beach, the pool or a park. I’m Melissa Ortega, Founder and CEO of Castle & Bay and the inventor of the Sphinx Personal Lounger™ and we are changing the dynamics of lounging. Let us help you get comfortable this summer!

Looks great but the price point seems high for something I have to blow up. Sigh - otherwise, I would order one.

I agree with CP, looks interesting but too much to pay for something you blow up and has the potential to pop! If it were less expensive I'd likely purchase a few for myself and really looks wonderful.

@cp and @dg - We're glad you like these. At Daily Grommet we love to support and share the stories of innovators and bring you fresh products. These aren't mass produced and so they don't have a price point of something you'd find at your local chain store. We wouldn't be surprised if in a few years after the early adopters and influencers have made them the must have accessory for personal lounging, that you will see them produced in mass and their price point come down.

I LOVE this! Thanks for such a superior quality lounger! I bought one at a convention & was quite impressed with all that has gone into it...even to the point of having a special place to put your chin, etc.! It is so versatile. The material is of a higher caliber material than your average blow up pool stuff. In fact, I take mine to the lake, where there are all sorts of "strange stuff" floating around in there, and it has held up just fine!

As for the price point, well, I will simply say this, You expect to pay a little more for QUALITY and added features, etc. Some people will never buy a Mercedes, Lexus, Volvo, etc.,which is better built and will last longer--not strictly because they cannot afford it, but because they compare it to all of the other lesser quality cars that they've owned and are used to. You get what you pay for!

Thank you for the great reception! I wanted to let you all know that the Sphinx Personal Lounger™ was made with durability in mind. Made with 3mm PVC, it has been puncture tested on the lava rocks in Hawaii and has been weight tested too! It holds more than 300lbs sitting on it. Make it a great day everyone!

Did you know that when the Sphinx Personal Lounger™ is deflated it is about the size of a loaf of bread and only weighs 2lbs. (And, YES it does go right back in the mesh bag carrier it comes with!) This means that you can travel with it anywhere! On cruise, on you next vacation to the beach, on your boat. The possibilities are endless!

Sun arrived in Seattle, with the 4th of July. I was SSSOOO excited

to finally open up my Sphinx while partying with friends next to

the sound. It made quite a "splash" so to speak and everybody wanted to try it out. All agreed it was a brilliant invention! You

    Hi -

I'm a Pilates Instructor, and whilst your product looks interesting -

I'd just like to know how, when you're lying prone (on your belly) on this, using it as a support, how it manages to NOT create/facilitate compression in your lumbar spine (lower back)?...

  • Melissa
    7/30/2012 2:51 PM

@ Ellena Hi Ellena, thank you for the question. I assume as a Pilates instructor you know about ergonomics too. I am a massage therapist for over 15 years and thought about this very thing. That is why I had the help of a chiropractor to make sure that the positioning was correct and we also put in a chin dip to protect the trachea. The incline when you are laying prone is so gradual that there is no impingement on the lumbar spine. The device has two valves for inflation so that everyone can inflate it to their own comfort. I broke my back in a head on collision and this is the only thing that allows me to lay comfortable on my belly for any length of time. By the way it is GREAT for a meditation chair! Make it an exceptional day and I hope you'll try it out! Melissa

Aloha! We remember Melissa's demonstration of her duct-taped prototype while having breakfast in Kona. It was impressive even then! So great to watch this evolve. We own two of them ourselves, and bought one for our daughter. They're amazing -- the price is right -- and you'll be the envy of the beach or pool.
