Multipurpose Toys

Wishbone Design creates multi-purpose toys that keep kids active, improve coordination, and help build independence. Plus, their toys are crafted sustainably and grow with your kids. This 3-in-1 wagon is a perfect example. It’s a beautifully crafted wooden version of a classic wagon that has three functions. Mom and Dad can push or pull it. But kids can steer also it like a soap box racer or power it with their own feet through a hatch in the floor. It’s a wagon your kids can have fun with for years. Founders Richard Latham and Jennifer McIver are native New Zealanders who wanted their young kids to play and run free—like they did growing up. The challenge: they lived in an NYC apartment. But through smart design, they began creating multi-functional toys that encourage kids to do more for themselves, wherever they live. Wishbone’s toys use materials that are selected to be sustainable, durable, and lightweight. It’s part of their commitment to making innovative toys that kids can push, pull, steer, ride . . . and grow with.

This is based off the classic red wagon. What made you look at that and think of a revamp?

Wishbone Design Studio is all about creating a new generation of contemporary classics for today's kids. We draw on our own childhood experiences for inspiration and create products which combine modern design thinking with old-school play value. We aim straight at the heart of what kids love best. How did you settle on the tri-functionality of the Wishbone Wagon?

Some of the happiest memories of Rich's childhood are constructing his own soap box racer within buddies, then racing it around his school grounds. We wanted to create a soap box racer that would offer very young children the thrill of driving their very own foot- or gravity-propelled car. Around the same time, we happened to visit friends in Madison, Wisconsin on the 4th of July. We pulled our three little kids in a classic red wagon in the parade and loved it. Rich realized that combining these two experiences together - downhill racer and classic wagon - would delight every kid who had the good fortune to own one.

This is made of sustainable birch, how important was using high-quality materials in its development?

Using quality, sustainable materials is central to our design ethos. Wishbone's philosophy is to design items so great that they make you consume less overall. We encourage you to buy one, best quality, transformable toy that will take the place of several others that would ultimately break and become landfill. We use robust, long-lasting materials and offer all components as spare parts after purchase. With care and always storing indoors overnight, your wishbone wagon will be the favorite toy for many kids to come.

Outside of pure nostalgia, why is this a product a parent should have for their kids?

Wishbone Wagon is a kid magnet. Kids are instinctively drawn to get actively involved, because of its bright red colour and styling like their own personal car. So many of us parents are concerned today about the amount of time kids spend passively playing on digital devices. Wishbone Wagon brings out the inner adventurer in your child. They voluntarily head outdoors to play with it. And better yet, Wishbone Wagon inspires social play - it's at its best when two or three kids are playing together. What more could a modern parent want?

We were really excited when we were invited to launch Wishbone Wagon on The Grommet. Our goal is to get closer to our community and customers, to understand what they need and how we can design stuff that will transform their lives for the better. The Grommet is an amazing platform letting makers and users connect with each other in a unique way. Coming from New Zealand, it's a wonderful way to get to know you all digitally. That said, nothing beats sharing a chat and a beer face to face does it? Be sure to look us up if you ever make it down here to Wellington!
