Creativity, Unrestrained

Play from Scratch is the green-loving, creativity-promoting Minnesota company behind YOXO building kits. The interlocking Y, X, and O shapes let kids make anything they can imagine—no fasteners needed. All the pieces are made from recycled materials that are treated with bright soy- and water-based colors. Each kit comes with instructions to make one or two suggested objects. But kids are definitely encouraged to go rogue and create their own structures, vehicles, and creatures. They can even attach the YOXO pieces to household items—cereal boxes, paper towel holders, spoons, or whatever they can get their hands on. Founder Jeff Freeland Nelson created YOXO based on his eighth birthday present, a small box containing string, wire, and tape. He was thrilled to have the raw materials to build anything he wanted. Now Jeff and his team are dedicated to inspiring relentlessly creative kids with locally sourced, sustainable toys. So open a YOXO kit and start building. It’s a toy the whole family can feel good about.

Hello! I'm Jeff, Inventor & CEO of YOXO (pronounced "yock-so"), a sustainable building toy that inspires relentless creativity in kids. As a parent, I was shocked by the avalanche of uncreative plastic toys that invaded our house. I invented YOXO to tap into kids' natural creativity and inspire them to build using stuff around them. Kids love creating with YOXO. It's fun, intuitive and allows for nearly infinite creativity. We believe that makes YOXO a toy worth buying!

Wow! These look like tons of fun!

For the robot and the dragonfly, do you need to save up tubes ahead of time in order to build the kits?

    Thanks!

@Emma thanks for the great question! Everything you need to make the YOXO hero comes in the kit - even extra-sturdy tubes. Then kids love to take the hero apart and add stuff around the house - including TP tubes, paper towel rolls and cereal box panels - to invent something entirely new!

What ages is this appropriate for? Would it work for a very smart, active three yr. old?

Hi Kat, Kristan here from The Grommet.

I will allow Jeff to speak to this question more, but we are recommending ages 6 and up. If your very smart child is not interested in this intricate toy at this time, it is surely something he can grow to love.

@Kat, when I first invented YOXO I brought prototypes home to my very smart, active, 18-month-old and she had a blast making all sorts of amazing creations.

We label most of our kits for ages 6-106 due to the choking hazard presented by the stickers inside, but kids of all ages truly love making with YOXO. We've even heard that YOXO is being used in assisted living centers with adults, so the -106 part is no joke!

Finally some good American made toys for the holidays! Are all of the YOXO kits made in the USA?

Hi Roxanne. Yes! Our YOXO kits are made and assembled about 30 feet from where I am sitting in Saint Paul, Minnesota. We source the raw materials for YOXO links within 20 miles of our workshop, our stickers are made in Wisconsin and our packaging in Arkansas. Everything is made in the USA.

This looks like a toy my kids would love! I have four kids under the age of 10...what kit would be best? Would the YOXO MegaBuilder work for kids of all ages? Thank you!

Mairi, we designed the YOXO MegaBuilder just for you! The kit comes with 101 links and 20 tubes, which allows one extreme inventor to make huge creations and can engage up to six kids at one time in creative projects. The MegaBuilder comes with five project ideas, but the best designs will come from your kids!

    Hi Jeff,

I am thrilled to find a toy that is 100% made in the USA, sparks imagination and creativity and is eco-friendly!! I'm old enough to remember tinker toys when they were made in the USA and all wood so I can't wait to pass this on to my grandson. He is only three but I'm going to buy anyway and advise my daughter to remove the stickers for now.

Thank you! Tinker Toys were inspiring for me as a kid and YOXO reflects the same ideals of wide-open creative play. I am sure your grandson will have a blast making with YOXO!

YOXO is also good for travel. Our 3 & 4-year-old sons love to build, and these pack well in their backpacks. Great for airplanes and hotel rooms!
