Genie In a bottle

Can you imagine a humidifier that’s extremely quiet, unobtrusive and attractive? You can’t? Just wait until you see the Humio. Shaped like a genie bottle, the Humio uses ultrasonic vibrations to release a cool mist and add moisture to the air. It’s an easy way to soothe the unpleasant aftereffects of dry, heated air -- such as nosebleeds, congested sinuses and itchy skin -- without turning a room into a sauna. There’s no boiling water or steam involved, which means you don’t have to worry about accidental burns. Plus, there are no filters to replace. The Humio also includes an LED light that can change colors, adding ambiance to any room. The Humio comes to us from Jae Choi, founder of TribestLife, who wanted an easy, elegant solution to air quality issues. It’s time to let this genie out of the bottle.

I've tried multiple humidifiers and they all have one thing in common: They are extremely difficult to clean. What are the cleaning instructions for this unit? For example, does it have to be soaked? How often does it need to be cleaned? How difficult is it to clean? Thanks!

  • Joseph
    Joseph – Special Guest
    1/17/2011 2:57 PM

@Terry: The following general rule should apply to the proper care, cleaning and maintenance of Humio - clean daily and sanitize weekly or when Humio will not be used for several days or stored away. Please note, if water remains in the Water Tank for more than 24 hours, bacterial growth is possible. Do not leave water in the Water Tank for more than 24 hours when not in use.

    Daily Maintenance:

    1. Unplug Humio.

    2. Remove the Water Tank from the Motor Base.

    3. Empty all the water from the Motor Base and the Water Tank.

    4. Wipe all surfaces with a clean, soft towel.

    5. Refill with clean water.

    Weekly Maintenance:

    1. Unplug Humio.

    2. Remove the Water Tank from the Motor Base.

    3. Empty all the water from the Motor Base and the Water Tank.

    4. Do not immerse the Motor Base in water.

    5. Do not use bleach or any abrasive chemicals to clean Humio.

    6. Fill the Water Tank partially with a sanitizing solution by adding half a teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide per half gallon of water.

Note: If you prefer to use vinegar instead of the hydrogen peroxide, mix 1 part of vinegar to 4 parts of water. The vinegar smell can linger, so you might have to do some extra rinsing.

    7. Assemble the machine and let the solution soak for 20 minutes.

    8. Periodically lift the entire machine with one hand on the motor base and the other hand on the neck handle firmly pressed together and gently swish the water around by rotating the unit counterclockwise.

    9. After 20 minutes, empty the sanitizing solution from the Water Tank and Water Reservoir.

    10. Rinse all parts thoroughly to remove all sanitizing solution prior to further use.

    11. Remove any crusty mineral deposits, also known as scale build up, by scrubbing with a solution of half water and half vinegar using a soft brush.

Note: The deposits are usually found in the Base of the Humio.

    12. Rinse all parts thoroughly to remove all water and vinegar solution prior to further use.

    13. Wipe all parts dry and let stand for five minutes prior to use.

Please note, in order to remove the Rotating Mist Nozzle, you must remove the Neck Handle from the Water Tank and use a screwdriver to remove the attached screw for thorough cleaning.

    Storage Procedure:

    1. Follow all the steps found in the weekly maintenance portion of the proper care, cleaning and maintenance section.

    2. Make sure the unit is free of water and completely dry before repackaging.

    3. Repackage all Humio in the same color box provided when you first purchased the unit. If you do not have the color box, wrap Humio in a clear plastic bag and store in a clean cool dry place at room temperature and out of reach from children.

    4. Follow all the steps found in the weekly maintenance portion of the proper care, cleaning and maintenance section after long periods of storage, prior to use.

You can find all this information in the manual which is included with each unit.

What about mineral particulates in the air? Is this a problem with the ultrasonic humidifier?

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team

@Lori: I will let Joseph respond further. They do recommend using distilled water.

  • Joseph
    Joseph – Special Guest
    1/19/2011 6:37 PM

@Lori: As long as you routinely clean your unit as instructed in the manual, there is less likely of a chance you will see mineral particles also known as “white dust” in the air. White dust is normally the mineral deposits left behind from hard water. To prevent this scale build up, you must sanitize your unit once a week. We always recommend using distilled water in your unit because there are less minerals and a lower level of impurities with distilled water.

The light does not shut off, so you don't have an option of just humidifier without the nightlight, which is extremely annoying at night. In addition, at least on my unit, I can't actually get it to shut off at all without unplugging it. Completely not worth the money, but since I paid $15 to ship, also not worth returning. Will be getting rid of it at the end of the season.

@Noreen- Great question- Here's instructions to turn off the light and continue using the humidifier.

    1. Locate the ON/OFF Night Lamp Button 2. Push the ON/OFF Night Lamp Button once to begin the night lamp sequence 3. Hold the ON/OFF Night Lamp Button for two seconds to turn off the night lamp Let me know if this works.
