Engineering Style

What makes a civil engineer start designing headbands? The chance to solve a nagging problem with an elegant solution. The problem was headbands that won’t stay in place, and the solution is Violet Love’s printed headbands, which look great, absorb sweat and won’t slide off in the middle of a workout. The founder of Violet Love is Rebecca Michaels (on the right), who left her engineering career after the headbands she designed made a big splash at surf shops around Ocean City, Maryland. Now her repertoire includes gorgeous new dresses and scarves. Your practical side will love that the scarves are lightweight, machine-washable and wrinkle-free (perfect for traveling). Your artistic side will love the incredibly soft fabric and unusual printed patterns, which are abstract and colorful with a laidback vibe. The super long, super soft Maxi dress can be worn in so many different ways -- to work, around town, or to the beach. It keeps you cool and comfortable and has enough shape so you’ll feel put-together, not sloppy. There are lots of options for wearing the Violet Love accessories, too. You can go wide or slim with the headband, smoothing it across your forehead or sliding it toward the crown of your head. It’ll stay in position either way. The scarves are incredibly versatile, too. There’s enough fabric to wear one as a lightweight wrap around your shoulders, yet it’s not too bulky to loop around your neck. They’ll be your go-to attire this season, surfside to streetside.

Violet Love has turned me even more into a headband girl. I would always wear head bands for working out, but now with these patterns and how they fit so well I wear them more every day. I love how easy it is to throw on, adjust the width and go. I have always been into scarves and because of the size and how light weight these are, they will definitely come with me when I travel (plus no wrinkling). Thanks Rebecca -- for making us Violet Lovers!

This product intrigues me. I ALWAYS have a problem with headbands slipping backwards on my head. Can you tell me more about what helps this product stay in place? How are they different then the cotton stretchy ones that I can buy at Walmart? Of course these are way cute ... but stay factor?? Would love to hear from you.

@Lindsay: Thank you for such a great question!! Violet Love has actually been featured several times on the Today Show and Health Magazine for the "NO HEADACHE - NO SLIP" headband... There are several factors that make this headband "NO SLIP" - as a runner, as an ex-engineer - I designed them with this in mind!

    1. The Signature VL fabric is lightweight with a brushed texture that gives it it's remarkable comfort!

    2. Then, take the design concept of the VL Signature "UNFINISHED EDGE" - this allows the headband to be worn wide (as you can see it really conforms to the head) or can be worn skinny or really whatever way makes you happy!

    3. The back of the headband (worn at the nape of the neck) is then tapered for a perfect fit, making it small enough to sit comfortably, yet snugly for no-slip wear!

I hope this helps and can't wait for you to try one!! You'll be hooked for sure! :)

Patricia, Thanks for noticing the Made in USA aspect of Violet Love. It matters a lot to me to see domestic manufacture. Jobs are an obvious reason. But having manufacturing kept close also really spurs innovation. When I had my first industrial design job for a computer manufacturer it made me much better at my job to have my office above the factory. I could easily SEE the impact of my design decisions.

I'm a seenior and on disability, I thiink your headband sounds like a Great idea for the gym, I have different exercices I do and my hair is always falling down . Do you have any discounts or seconds that i could try to get cheaper. I only get a little over $500.00 and that just doesn't leave much for anything. This is a wonderful product and glad it's made in the USA. Very Proud to wear them.

    Thank You, Cathy

@Cathy: Getting to the gym and exercising on a regular basis is wonderful for your wellbeing. You are to be commended for your dedication. We don't have a discounted source of these headbands but know that you will be able to find something else in your budget that will keep your hair out of your eyes for when you exercise. Thanks for stopping by!

I wish to thank you for all of us going through chemotherapy who have lost our hair.

Your scarves are uniquely comfortable, they stay in place, and let us venture out of hibernation in confidence!

I will surely refer your company to to the ACS.

    Thank you so very much!

I love the maxi dresses, but so sad that they come in such a small range of sizes. Being s,m, & l. This looks to be a simple enough dress to expand up to us more curvey women in some larger sizes. Looking forward to that day....:)

@gigi: Doesn't this dress style make everyone look tall?! We do have one tester who is 5'10" but the others are all shorter than that. You can see the exact dress lengths and other sizing information on the details tab underneath the video.

@Melissa and Christy - These dresses are brand new to Violet Love's line and I'm sure as they expand, they will consider expanding their size range as well.

Hi there -- At first I was worried about length, since I'm only 5'5." But, I was pleasantly surprised since when I wear the dress and am in flip flops, it is very close to the floor but doesn't drag. I want to wear a bit of a heal/wedge with the length -- and it just looks better. I have some 4" wedges that look amazing with this dress! This is my summer staple -- so versatile. Wear it to the beach, out at a cook out and I can wear it to work - nice! Wendy

I am 5'2'', and aside from the fact that the dress that "almost" reaches the ground for a 5'5' woman would drag on the ground for me, I just don't look good in anything longer than mid-calf length. How about making a shorter dress? Also, what kind of a bra does one wear for that dress (assuming that the wearer really needs a bra)?

  • Katherine
    Katherine – Grommet Team
    6/27/2011 11:53 PM

@Deborah: That's a great suggestion to add a shorter dress length to their line. You can wear a normal bra with this dress, but you would want to get a Hollywood Fashion Secrets Bra Converting Clip to keep the straps out of sight.
