Great Body

Voloom is a hair volumizer that gives hair more body, using patented ceramic plates with a beveled checkerboard pattern. Quickly squeeze and release the plates on the under layers of hair, going from roots to chin. As you go, the plates add volume pockets that lift the top layer of hair. The more under layers you do, the more lift you create. The structure is heat-sealed in place, so it lasts for about two or three days. Founder Patty Lund, like many women, felt her thinning hair was making her look older. She came up with the Voloom hair volumizer to give her hair a fuller, more youthful look. Even more impressive, Patty had no design experience. But she found a design partner and worked on several prototypes before coming up with this unique solution. With Voloom, you don’t have to shampoo as often and you don’t need gels and sprays. Add fullness and grip to ponytails and updos, or even recreate the big hair of the eighties. @Judith

    Hi Judith! You do need a few inches of hair to work with; just above chin length or longer is best. You don't need any sprays or gels! That's the best part. And you do get great lasting volume. You use VOLOOM on the hair closest to the root that is rich in natural oils -- its own natural heat protection. You don't use it on the fragile ends as with curling irons or flatirons. And because you end up washing and heat styling and coloring less often, I have found that my hair is now much healthier since using VOLOOM.

    The digital heat settings are totally adjustable every five degrees from 220 to 395. I always advise starting with a lower heat setting and finding your perfect temperature. And you can also adjust it by deciding how long to clamp on the hair, or whether or not to clamp the plates all the way shut. You can go from just a little boost to mega volume depending on how you tweak your technique! And yes it is dual voltage.

    I have a fairly full head of hair and typically flat iron just the top sections to sort of achieve the same idea. If I don't flat iron the top section then it ends up looking frizzy by end of day. Would you recommend still flat ironing the top sections to achieve that look?

    Hi Carmen,

    Yes, start with your normal hairstyle. So if you currently flatiron the top sections, keep doing that. VOLOOM is meant to be used on the underlayers of hair to provide structure to keep the top layers lifted.

    I have lots of hair, shoulder length, with a bit of a wave but mostly straight. It is heavy and, unless squeaky clean, the weight of the hair will pull it down to my scalp. I use product to add volume, but I have to tease the top for more. Sounds like this is a helpful product for thin hair, but what about mine?

  • Patty

    @Dixie

    It is meant for any type of hair -- from thin to thick. Thicker hair is often very heavy, and tends to lie flat to the head. So it's perfect for the hair that you describe. With VOLOOM you don't have to tease or use styling products to get great volume.

    Hi Karen,

    It might not work on extremely short hair. The plates are about 1.5 inches wide, so you need a few inches of hair for it to work effectively. We say ear to chin length or longer. We will be coming out with a product specifically for short hair in the next few months.

    Hi Mary,

    It may take a little bit of practice, but the VOLOOM is very easy to use. You do have to squeeze the plates together so you would need to be able to do that. But the iron is built ergonomically. It is easier to use than a curling iron or a flatiron, but just takes a little practice to get the technique down. It sounds like it would work for your hair.

    Hi Patty! Interesting idea but a few questions...seems similar to what a blow dryer can do with wet hair when blow drying upside down. Can this be used on wet hair or just dry hair? Also,the pricing is on the higher side of the hair straighteners that have the special ions to reduce frizz etc. Does this device help control frizz also? My last question is this also seems similar to a hair straightener by the way the item is used with slowly going down the hair shaft. Am I understanding that correctly? Thanks for your time and again, great idea and good luck! :)

  • Patty

    7/14/2015 12:45 PM

    @Shauna

    Hi Shauna,

    VOLOOM adds more volume than any drying technique possibly can! And the best part is that the volume lasts for days. It is meant to be used on dry, styled hair as a finishing step to give you that lush voluminous look. It is not designed to control frizz like a flatiron, and is used on the underlayers of hair. And when you use it, you just clamp it on for only a second on the hair nearest the scalp. You never pull it through the hair like a flatiron. Just clamp and release two to three times on the hair nearest the scalp to give it lasting lift.

    Hi Patty,

    I purchased the Voloom two weeks ago and have followed the instructions to a "T". My main concerns are the crown area and the back of my head, but so far the results have been very disappointing. My hair is about the same length as yours, and the under-layers have gotten frizzy and are NOT flattering. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong! Also, is there a case for the Voloom? I received the clips with my purchase, but no case. Thank you so much!

  • Patty
    Patty – Special Guest
    7/14/2015 12:54 PM

    @ROBIN

    Hi Robin,

    It can take a bit to perfect your technique, so hang in there! The structure that VOLOOM leaves in the hair is similar to that of naturally curly or wavy hair, and that is why it is meant to be covered by a smooth outer layer. If your hair is fine, like mine, you may need to only clamp the iron really quickly -- less than a second -- on the hair nearest the scalp. You can also use a lower temperature and control the texture in that way. One thing that I sometimes do is use the iron very close to the top layer of hair on the crown, but don't close the plates much at all. That way, you get almost no texture, but significant lift. Just hold the plates on the hair without closing. As for the pouch, some configurations did not include it.

    Hi Patty,

    I have a keratin treatment on my hair which I have done 3X a year. It makes my hair straighter than it usually is and also makes my hair incredibly shiny and "young" looking. I usually back comb the top of my hair for some volume and am wondering if the Voloom will lessen the effectiveness of the keratin treatment?

  • Patty
    Patty – Special Guest
    7/14/2015 12:58 PM

    @Polly

    Hi Polly,

    Many people use VOLOOM because they have keratin treatments for the sleek look, but find that their hair is too flat. VOLOOM works great for this kind of hair, and it will not change the effectiveness of the keratin treatment. It will temporarily add structure to the underlayers of the hair where it is used. Just make sure you have a nice layer to cover so that you maintain that sleek look that you like. Only now, you can have big volume too!

  • Patty
    Patty – Special Guest
    7/14/2015 6:12 PM

    I just wanted to add that the VOLOOM structure will last until you wash your hair or get it wet. After shampooing, the keratin treatment will be back in effect.

  • Patty

    7/14/2015 1:03 PM

    @Marie

    Hi Marie,

    The reason for the cost is that the plates are fairly expensive to make as they are highly engineered. But I will say, that most people report that they are washing and styling and coloring their hair much less often. So that means less money spent on color, etc. And you don't need any styling products with VOLOOM. So that saves money as well. I had drawers full of volumizing sprays and gels that I just threw out.

    Looking at the demonstration video it seems to create a crimped look. Is that what it is supposed to do or do you brush it out a little?

  • Patty
    Patty – Special Guest
    7/14/2015 1:07 PM

    @Jeanette

    Hi Jeanette,

    You brush that out after it cools and what you're left with is underlayers of hair that look like they are slightly wavy or naturally curly. The plates were designed in that checkerboard pattern so that the structure left in the hair doesn't leave a clear crimped look as with a crimper. I tried crimpers for the same purpose, but they always left that tell-tale ridged pattern in my hair. And they didn't give enough volume. Have you ever noticed that people with natural curl or waves always have thicker looking hair? That's the kind of structure that VOLOOM leaves in the underlayers of hair to support the smooth upper layers.

    7/14/2015 1:18 PM

    @Mary

    Hi Mary,

    I have a good friend who uses VOLOOM for just that purpose! All you need to do is to take the hair surrounding the cowlick, and clamp VOLOOM on very quickly on that segment. The cowlick will be gone! I do the same thing on my hair because I only wash about every 4 days and just use VOLOOM to amp up the volume. But when I sleep on it, I get a cowlick. VOLOOM makes it disappear and gives it volume in that spot.

    Hi Michele,

    Yes! It will! I know, because that's my hair. Absolutely nothing worked for me. No gels, or sprays, or teasing. Not even a professional blowout. It would flatten out within an hour of leaving the salon. But I can get amazing volume now, and it does last for days. Keep in mind, that this is a power tool. So it may take a few times to perfect your technique. And if your hair is superfine, you just have to make sure that you keep a nice smooth layer on top. Having a great hair day makes such a difference in your confidence. Life is too short to worry about your hair!

    Patty, thank you so much for developing this amazing hair volumizer. I have tried for years to create (and keep) volume in my hair. I found that teasing and using gel products temporarily poofed my hair and then the opposite would happen--even flatter hair after a few hours. With my Voloom, my style lasts for days, literally. All I do is give it a little brush through and a tousle and I'm ready for my day/night. My husband says I've never looked sexier (and many have said I even look younger!) thank you, thank you!!

Voloom

Hair Volumizing Iron

(Whitesnake video, anyone?)

    It might not work on extremely short hair. The plates are about 1.5 inches wide, so you need a few inches of hair for it to work effectively. We say ear to chin length or longer. We will be coming out with a product specifically for short hair in the next few months.

    I would be interested in a product for short hair also. I have lots of hair with no body! Have bad arthritis and it is difficult to reach back of hair and wonder if I could manage the iron?

    @Shauna

    I can understand the efficacy with long hair. Yet I am wondering about a shorter hair style effectiveness? Hair that is shaped to the head and not below the chin.

    Hi Catherine,

    It is hard for me to tell without seeing your hair, but you do need several inches of hair to work with as the plates are 1.5 inches wide. We will be coming out with a version specifically for very short hair in the near future.

    Keep in mind that this product will work in all but the shortest hair. If your hair reaches to the ends of your ears or longer, it should be fine. It also makes the layers of a good haircut pop!

    @ROBIN

  • Patty

    @Polly

    I just wanted to add that the VOLOOM structure will last until you wash your hair or get it wet. After shampooing, the keratin treatment will be back in effect.

    @Marie

    @Jeanette

    I have a cowlick on the crown of my head I am always trying to cover it with back combing, products and anything that I think may work. Will Voloom do the trick to hide my cowlick and keep a little poof on the cow licked spot?

    @Mary

    Hi Patty! Thanks for the fabulous product. I just wanted you to know how much I love the Voloom and I can honestly say -- no more bad hair days. I have to wear a headset at work and when I take it off, my hair is easily fluffed back into style! This use to be a problem when I had to use hairspray -- then my hair would be stiff and stick straight out when I took off the headset.

    @Michele

    Hi Michele,

    Yes!

    Thanks Mike,

    When you watch this video, you can see that you work in the underlayers of the hair, clipping the top layer off to the side. You work close to the root and about three clamps down the hair shaft. Do as many layers as you like. More layers equals more volume. Then just unclip the top layers and that's it! Major volume that lasts for days.
