Funding The Future

When a student’s learning experience aligns with their interests, they’re more engaged and involved. These instances, however, can be limited for students from low-income backgrounds. Wishbone is an organization dedicated to empowering these students’ passions. They create crowdfunding campaigns to help students attend summer programs that match up with their interests. Prospective Wishbone students fill out a profile complete with a personal essay and teacher recommendation so donors can see the student their dollars are championing. Students have attended sports, leadership, performing arts, business, and design programs. When they return to the classroom, teachers find Wishbone students more confident, determined, and eager to work. And they’re ready to share with their peers what’s possible.

The organization has proven to enhance a student's learning experience, how has the organization evolved since the start?

Wishbone was initially inspired by the passion of students, and they continue to be at the center of our model. When the organization launched in 2012, students found their own programs, and Wishbone assisted students in raising the needed funds to partake in those experiences.

Six years later, Wishbone has now established itself as a key player within a vast network of affiliated partners across the country. We connect high schools, colleges, summer programs, and major funders with the common goal of inspiring students. Wishbone is now matching low-income students to over 200 programs nationwide, including Stanford University, Parsons School of Design, University of Connecticut, Brown University, Harvard University, and Yale University.

Wishbone bridges the access and affordability gap for low-income high school students to enroll in high-quality summer programs. To make this financially feasible for each student, Wishbone negotiates scholarships directly from programs, invites citizens to become donors in crowdfunding students, and works with local philanthropy to cover students’ costs. Each year we close that gap for hundreds of students and open the door for them to have new, eye-opening experiences.

What have you noticed about students coming back to the classroom after participating in a program?

For the students we serve, summer can and should be a time to discover their path and explore their educational options. We find that these rich experiences prompt low-income students to recognize their potential, develop confidence, and to feel equipped to pursue their goals. After attending a summer program through Wishbone, 95% say they feel more prepared for their future.

So many Wishbone students return to school with a broader sense of what they can accomplish, who they can be friends with, and who they can learn from. Through this experience, these young people discover more about themselves and find their path to college and career readiness.

Wishbone is bringing rich experiences to more students each year, and we are focused on expanding our impact. We’re especially excited to establish more partnerships with school communities who want to give students access to these kinds of experiences outside of the classroom. With our model, we enable schools to accomplish this vision at scale. We guide hundreds of their students through the process of gaining access and funding in order to support each young person’s self-discovery toward their college and career journey.

People outside of school communities are directly involved in supporting students and witnessing their success through our crowdfunding platform. The more people that engage in Wishbone’s crowdfunding platform, the more student aspirations we are able to financially support.
