Withings

Connected Health Devices

Sleek Trackers

Connected health devices are everywhere, but the devices from Withings are steps above (pun intended). Each is an artful object that collects and presents health data in a useful, approachable way.

From Swiss watch-inspired fitness trackers to a sculptural alarm clock that helps you fall asleep and monitors your sleep quality, Withings offers the tools to improve many aspects of everyday health and wellbeing.

To make that goal even easier, all of their elegant devices present your data in their Health Mate app. If
you use their Smart Body Analyzer (a scale that also records body mass, heart rate, and air quality) as well as, say, their Activité fitness tracker, you’ll easily see a more complete picture of your overall health and activity.

The two engineer-Founders worked together in telecommunications, and put their technology and usability expertise to use innovating in the field of connected health. Withings’ approach is to not just collect data, but empower its users to achieve a more balanced and healthy life, and with products that will seamlessly become a part of their everyday routine.

Make informed decisions, set goals, and, most importantly, see some progress with this smart and stylish suite of devices. Withings makes it simple to take charge of your health.

In your mind, what sets Withings devices apart from other health monitoring devices?

  • Erin

Quite simply, no one else does what we do. At Withings we want people to take a look at their health from a 360° perspective monitoring their activity, heart, sleep, weight and environment. We’ve created an ecosystem of devices to allow people to access the full health picture. As a French company, style and ease of use are greatly important to us. Health tech products don’t need to look like gadgets, we’ve created sleek, sexy products that will easily fit into your lifestyle.

@Erin my question is related to the blood pressure monitor, Arm size on most blood pressure monitors is factor - what is the maximum size arm that your monitor works on?

  • Erin

    11/9/2015 12:37 PM

@Leonard Great question Leonard. That certainly is a factor. Our cuff fits arm circumferences 22 to 42 cm (9 to 17 in).

You’ve created a full-fledged health system tracking a gauntlet of metrics. There’s an activity tracker, a blood pressure monitor, a full-body analyzer, and a sleep system. Were these metrics always essential to you when developing the products?

Our smart scale is our bread and butter. Obesity and overweight rates were on the rise as were the health complications associated with them. We sought to create a product to help solve these issues. While working on continuing to improve this product we started branching out into other pillars of health because things like activity, sleep and environment are playing a direct role on your weight. Tracking one without the others won’t fully solve the issue.

Is the smart scale "safe" for users who have pacemakers, or is there a caution/warning?

Hi Lyn, the smart scale should not be used if you have a pacemaker.

We tested these devices in the office and they are so seamless and easy to use. How vital was that aspect?

Ease of use was hugely important to us when developing these products. Gathering personal health data isn’t usually on the forefront of people’s minds, so the easier the products are to use, the more likely people are to use them. Our activity trackers, for instance, automatically track steps, sleep and swimming and run on an 8-month battery. As a user, all you have to do is sync it to your Health Mate app, pop it on your wrist, and we’ll take care of the rest. This automatic detection of data and extended battery life puts less pressure on the user allowing for a better experience.

Our wide range of products means that we have a couple of different customer bases. As a whole, the common denominator for all of our customers is that they want to live a healthier life. Whether that’s a grandfather needing to track his blood pressure daily, or a college student keeping track of his or her steps as they walk to or from class, or a Dad who loves staying up to date on the new tech products and bought our Smart Body Analyzer to encourage his family to lose weight together, they all want to be healthier in their everyday lifestyles.

Living a healthier life is achievable, and small steps can add up to big changes. We have several features to incentivize people to share data, which has been proven to help people improve their health whether they’re taking more steps, losing more weight, or measuring their blood pressure daily. We have a Leaderboard so people can compete against friends to see who is more active, social sharing opportunities for new weight goals or active days, and we strive to create a strong and welcoming community. Empowering people with the tools to get healthy is only a small subset of what we do. It’s also important to foster a strong community of support. Having a group of people in your corner as you embark on a journey to healthy adds an extra edge of accountability and motivation.

Erin, you might want to check with Withings to see if they have resolved their problem with the blood pressure monitor. When I bought mine a couple of years ago I could not get it to work...the readings were all over the board and never anywhere near accurate. I called Withings and after a discussion I learned that sine I have an irregular heartbeat the device cannot work for me. I was also not able to return the device and had to threaten them with the Better Business Bureau to get my money back due to false advertising! They promised to change their ad but clearly never did. I guess I have to contact the BBB after all!

@maureen Hi Maureen. We are very sorry for any miscommunication on our part. The Blood Pressure Monitor cannot give an accurate reading if the user has an irregular heart beat. We'd like to know more about your experience with us in troubleshooting your device. Please reach out to us at [email protected] Thanks!

Hi Erin...my comment is regarding the cost of the Withings line of Connected Health Products. My calculations (admittedly done quickly) suggest that to purchase the entire line would cost roughly between $600 and $900, depending on whether one chose the "upscale" Activite, or the Pop Activite (I'm assuming they both provide identical information). While you may rightly argue that this is a small price to pay for what your product does, my response is that as a retiree living on social security and a pension, I simply can afford all of the Withings products, but that's on me. I am wondering though if you have a suggestion as to which of the items might best serve someone if bought individually, apart from the others. I realize without knowing my health information, it's impossible to answer my question specifically, but maybe you can give a general recommendation based on your knowledge of which item is your best seller, plus customer feedback. I certainly wouldn't hold you to any hard and fast claims regarding any suggestions you might consider passing on to me. Thanks much and continued success with your product line.

    Doug

@Doug Hi Doug! You make some great points here. As you can see we make a wide variety of products to help improve individuals health in many different ways based on our company's five pillars of health: heart, weight, activity, sleep and environment. Meaning whichever pillar you feel you need to improve the most will align with one or multiple products we create. In an ideal world we'd love for our customers to have the full line to be able to track all aspect of their health but we realize that's not feasible for most people.

In terms of suggestions specifically for you, you're right it 100% depends on your health needs and price point. Our scale was our first product we created and remains to be one of our most popular. Giving you data like your weight, heart rate, BMI, body fat% and a weather update, it's an awesome product to start with!

@Erin @Doug Hi Doug, Blaise from The Grommet team here. I actually had the pleasure of testing out quite a few of the Withings lineup. And while I can't say enough great things about Withings as a whole, the Smart Body Analyzer scale was particularly incredible.

As Erin said, in just a moment you get your weight, heart rate, BMI, body fat%, and even the current weather. I was a bit unsure of why my scale was giving me weather information, until one day it told me it was going to rain even though it was sunny outside. I brought my umbrella anyway, and low and behold, it saved me from a downpour later on that day.

Though my favorite part was looking through all of my data from when I first started using it. I got to see a new workout routine working as the data encouraged me to live a healthier life.

    I hope that helps!
