Liquid Metal

Fluid Mesh Jewelry

Fluid Metal Statement

It’s hard to believe Sergio Gutierrez’s exquisite jewelry and accessories are crafted from humble ball and chain pieces. Sergio, an engineer by trade, transforms these simple elements into a stunning mesh-like fabric he creates by soldering the tiny pieces together in intricate patterns. His work led him from Colombia, where he was born, to San Francisco, where he got his first big break in a Haight-Ashbury boutique when Betsey Johnson discovered his jewelry. Sergio’s interest in 16th century artifacts, particularly chainmail, has inspired his work.

Today Sergio’s studio, called Liquid Metal, creates gorgeous pieces forged of this luxurious metal mesh that really does feel like it’s melting into your skin. We’ve selected a wide cuff bracelet with a diamond design to feature. The antique silver-colored cuff has a modern, chunky silhouette with a hint of vintage style that makes it a great statement piece whether it’s paired with jeans or a cocktail dress. While it’s meant to be worn tight to the arm, it’s incredibly comfortable due to the flexibility of the mesh. It’s romantic and edgy at the same time, with a personality that will make it one of the go-to pieces in your jewelry box.

I would like to see myself in this set. *big smile* It looks beautiful, but tough! I love that it's something unique and different.

The only person I'd want to see this on is my lovely wife. She's the best, works hard, and sacrifices for us all the time. It would be a wonderful treat, and her inner beauty would shine as much as her outer looks to enhance the artistic nature of the product itself. Thanks for your consideration and sharing this great piece.

I would recreate the movie "Braveheart" as a play and have William Wallace's secret wife wear this under her costume so she survives the attack by the British soldiers ... chicks would dig the plot twist and their guys would love the curtain call at the end (as if guys don't already love the whole "Braveheart" thing enough already :) Happy Valentine's Day!

When these arrived at Daily Grommet, I put the bracelet on right away and had to have one of my own. Every time I wear it, someone comments on it. One of my friends up in VT fell in love with it and asked me to try it on.

Thanks Sergio -- this is one of my favorite pieces. Cuffs are hot right now and this one looks and feels amazing.

I came at this a bit late in the day, but I'm noticing that there aren't sizing details (I posted on FB just in case someone at DG notices it there first). I would like to reserve the right to remove myself from the running should the sizing not be compatible because I would really hope that the winner would get some use out of it!

So, provided it would fit me...

I just recently discovered that my husband is spending my upcoming birthday (my 30th, which is extremely monumental in my life for reasons other than it being another decade) on a business trip. My birthday falls 4 days after Valentines, and he is also pretty convinced that he'll have to be gone by then as well.

When I discovered this earlier today, I wasn't upset....I was plotting revenge. I'm not really a wring my hands kind of woman if there is skullduggery to be had. I am at my best when skullduggery is involved, that is a fact.

My intention is to put on the bikini and snap a few photos of myself in it and then have them sent to the hotel he'll be at on my birthday. Then I'm going to wear them out to dinner with some gal pals and drink martinis until I have to be poured into a cab and sent home.

Unless of course he's pulling some "Aha! Fooled you! Welcome to Fiji!" present, and then I'm going to skip the martinis and the couriered photos. Oh alright, the photos. And then I'm never coming back. I'm prepared to make that sacrifice, DG, I'm a hero like that.

Thanks for clarification on the sizing, Joanne. I suspected that it didn't come in specific sizes and relied on the strings to adjust it accordingly, but couldn't find anywhere to confirm it.

I think I might want the jewelry more than the bikini! I'll have to point my husband in this direction for gift ideas. I'd like to register my vote for Sally W. Friends giving this to friends is so fantastic!

What a unique and eye-catching piece of jewelry! Immediately, this made me think of a very close friend of mine who married an indian man in an indian ceremony - the jewelry she wore from family all flowed and laid on her in such a flattering way. Ok ... it took us a while, but we've finally selected a winner. In no particular order, these were some of our runners up:

The only person I'd want to see this on is my lovely wife...[Chris M] - extra points for your 2nd "bubble" comment!

I would wear this set at an ecstatic dance music event ... [JenSolo]

This would be terrificly fashionable armor for my warrior wife, Diana ... [Eitan]

I'd like to see BOTH Leno and Conan sporting this liquid metal get-up in a "Dance With The Stars" samba competition ... [Amie Breed]

With a special nod to OC for his daring plan to reveal his crush (it would certainly have been an interesting way to let her know!)

... but in the end, we all agree that "Kath" was the winner with her very creative comment:

I would recreate the movie "Braveheart" as a play and have William Wallace's secret wife wear this under her costume so she survives the attack by the British soldiers ... chicks would dig the plot twist and their guys would love the curtain call at the end (as if guys don't already love the whole "Braveheart" thing enough already :) Happy Valentine's Day!

Wow! Send us a note and picture of yourself wearing this gorgeous set at the premiere - and congratulations Kath.

I have owned the thin bracelet for many years, wore it almost everyday and received so many compliements. Unfortunately, this year a few of the solders broke apart and it sits in my jewelry box. The store where I purchased it from (Asinimali, Evanston, IL) doesn't carry this syle any more and I woould love to replace it.

I have one question though, mine did not close with a snap,,,it had more of a regular clasp, Have you changed this closure over the years. Some of your snap bracelets are too small for my wrist, although I do notice here that you have different lengths avaiable.

@Sharon Sarotte: What a testament to a great bracelet! Of the bracelets we carry, none are a perfect match. The thin mesh cuff is an inch wide and 7 1/4 inches long. The mesh cuff is 1 3/4 inches wide and 7 1/4 inches long. The diamond mesh cuff is 2 3/4 inches wide and we have the 7 1/4, 7 1/2, and 7 3/4.

What luck! I only discovered you because the name "Grommet" in a fashion site email intrigued me. I use a lot of grommets for corset lacing in my "re-designing" of vintage clothes and such. I actually gasped when my click unveiled my favorite bracelet EVER! I bought Sergio's wide mesh cuff at the Folsom Street Fair (San Francisco's leather bar mecca), in about 1992. It was, without a doubt, my favorite bracelet ever! As a musician and jewelry junkie, most bracelets are too obtrusive to wear on stage, especially one so fabulous and bold. Sergio's was like part of me. I put the bracelet on the moment I bought it (for far less, btw), and rarely removed it. It was my signature piece, comfortable and perfect for my style. I was heartbroken when it fell off one night; disappearing into the land of single earrings. I have no idea what happened. I never once had a problem with it before, wasn't dancing... I didn't even remove my jacket. I'm almost certain the closure was different. Regardless, it was gone and I never found another until now! I'm also a huge fan of chain maille, so I'm not surprised Sergio was inspired by it. I could look at his things all night long! I just can't stop gushing, can I? I'm just that excited! Thank you, Grommet, you made my day! Thank you Sergio, for my beloved delectation of a bracelet (while I had it), and the gift of your luscious work! Health annoyances preclude purchasing at the moment, but just admiring your pieces did me FAR better than any pill or potion. The instant I can, I'll be back. Few things are as therapeutic as looking at something beautiful that makes you happy!:) Sorry to blather on. What an inspiration!

@RockStarlet : You can come here and blather anytime. I loved your story and what Sergio's work means to you. I will make sure that he sees it. I wish you a speedy trip back to health so that your wrist can once again be adorned by this beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing.

I'm 64 years old and I really think that the mesh cuff bracelet is beautiful.

I can't afford one but I just wanted you to know that something like that bracelet still attracts young and old people's attention. Very smart work done to create it.

Earlier email (Dec.4,2010), someone mentioned that a few solders had broken apart after several years. I didn't see an answer to this...and it raises a question as to warranty. Is there a warranty and what would it be? Returns, repairs etc. for bracelets bought through Grommet, or through a retail outlet?

@Roberta: Great question. If a product breaks through a manufacturing defect, they will repair the piece at no charge. If it breaks after years of use through normal wear and tear, they will repair the piece but there will be a repair charge.

I have a very small wrist and most "normal" size bracelets are much too big - can the size of these be adjusted?

Hi, I have one of the liquid metal bracelets and it broke. One of the strands came out at one end. I took it to my jeweler and they couldn't fix it. I was heartbroken because I loved it! Can I send it somewhere to be repaired? CAN it be repaired? Thanks - Janice

It's February 1 and I'm particularly looking forward to these beautiful bracelets becoming available. So much so that I've not allowed much time in February to pass before inquiring about them, I realize. I'm grateful that it's a short month. Do you have an expectation for when they may become available?

    Thank you,

    Lee Anne

@Lee Anne R.: It's definitely a great idea to start planning now for Valentine gifts, especially for very popular, special items. Unfortunately, we just found out that these popular Liquid Metal bracelets might not be available for Valentines ;0( If they become available, we will contact you. In the meantime, you might want to check out the 55+ Grommets that have received rave reviews as Valentine gifts here. We hope you'll find another special gift that's just as appealing.

@Sandy: What size is your wrist? The liquid mesh bracelet is 7.25 or 7.75 inches long. If your wrist is smaller, you might want to check these other bracelets that can be adjusted for your wrist: iheartjenna and Round House Jewelry. Make sure to go to the DETAILS tab (below the video) for more info.

I still consider my bracelet new as I received it in the mail less than a month ago. I wish I'd begun on day one to count the compliments. From friends to clerks, anyone who is near enough to see my bracelet and for long enough to mention it, I hear enthusiastic praise and interest in its origin. I mention Daily Grommet and its mission as well as Sergio Gutierrez and his artistic engineering genius.

Big thanks to him and DG!

OMG! My best friend sports one of your bracelets & received as a "Mother of the Bride" gift. I have searched & searched & she would give me NO information on it...well, there you are! I go to order & wouldn't you know it, OUT OF STOCK!

Nonetheless, I would like a WIDE one so when you get them in, I am buying as a gift for myself! I am known for my bracelets....I don't believe I will ever remove this except to bathe or change into another...I want to purchase several!! I will have to space them out due to the $$$, all worth it. Can't wait!

    Love your are a talent!

@ leslie: There is a 1/2" overlap at the snap. Since your wrist is 7", the 7 1/2" bracelet will be the right fit for you.

LOVE this bracelet! Can you help me figure out what size I should get? My wrists are small - roughly 6 inches - but I prefer bracelets looser rather than tight cuffs - would a drapey effect work with this piece? Would the 7 3/4 inch be too big - slip off? Thanks!

  • Chew-Hoong
    Chew-Hoong – Grommet Team
    11/13/2012 8:05 AM

@ Kris: Some of my colleagues have petite wrists like yours and agree that the 7 1/4" bracelet is the right fit. It will still allow for the drapey look you like.

I absolutely LOVE my liquid metal bracelet, but unfortunately recieved the wrong size. Another stroke of bad luck is that I recieved it the day before Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast. Is is possible to give me an update as to when I will recieve a Return Authorization number so that I can return my bracelet and get the correct size?
