Collared Shirt for Layering

Get The Skinny

If you love the classic look of a collared shirt under a sweater but you’re not a fan of feeling uncomfortably bulky, you’re going to be thrilled with Julie Kalimian’s creation, dubbed the SkinnyShirt.

This ingenious shirt has a stretchy, knit body paired with a woven cotton collar. From the neckline up, the shirt appears to be a classic button-front collared shirt. But below the neckline, it’s all about comfort. Imagine your favorite stretchy, comfy camisole—that’s how the SkinnyShirt feels. In fact, that’s just
how Julie came up with the first prototype for the SkinnyShirt. She asked her local tailor to merge a camisole and one of her collared shirts.

The idea really took off when Julie tapped into her network and connected with Alexandra Shuman, a designer at Michael Kors, who helped take the SkinnyShirt from concept to closet. Julie achieved the smooth, slimming result she had envisioned. Paired with sweaters, dresses, jackets, tank tops, and short-sleeve tops, SkinnyShirt is a great way to give your wardrobe a more sharp, professional look. It’s fashion that fits just right.

    Hey Everyone!

I am SO excited that SkinnyShirt is being featured as the Grommet of the Day!

Who doesn't love a good problem/solution product. I know I do-- especially one that makes you look slimmer after all the holiday indulgences! One day when I was fed up looking bunchy and bulky from wearing a button-down shirt under my sweater I had a eureka moment. That day the SkinnyShirt was born. So, if you want to chat about how to look pulled together without the bunch and bulk I would love to talk.

@paula: Since the shirt is a stretchy knit across the bust SkinnyShirt stretches to accommodate most bust sizes.

Love it. I have a similar need for my 2.5 and 5 year old boys. For the toddler, I always thought a collared onesie would be perfect -- no more shirt tails hanging out!

@Liz B.: LOL! I must admit we have thought of many, many versions, but this is a new and good one to add to the list! : - )

@Sandra Stark: If you are deciding between two sizes I have been recommending sizing up as the shirts are fitted. Hope this helps!

Need to know if the shirt will shrink at all (wash cold, tumble dry low?)...I'll need to buy one size up if it will shrink. Thanks.

@Heidi: Good question! They actually do not shrink in the laundry. You can tumble dry low, but I sometimes hang dry mine. The shirts are fitted. So, if you are between sizes or not sure about sizing I recommend sizing up. I hope this help!

I have been recommending that folks size up if they are deciding between two sizes as the shirts are fitted. I hope this helps!!

Cute idea, but I was wondering, why so expensive? Is it made out of really rare materials?

  • Katherine

    2/1/2011 6:47 PM

@Sally: We completely understand your reaction to the price. I will let Julie add any insight, but generally when you are supporting innovation from smaller manufacturers using better quality materials and labor, the prices are going to be higher than other mass produced and marketed apparel items.

We definitely see this becoming a classic in any wardrobe that will stand the test of time and provide real value year after year.

@Sally: Hi! We use a very fine cotton poplin with stretch along with Mother of Pearl buttons. And, the body is made of a really great , comfy stretchy knit. The high quality materials are reflected in the price.

Great idea! And great timing. Coincidentally, I was at a major department store yesterday to buy a stretchy camisole (starting price $35) and work blouses (starting price $50). This is 2 for 1 - with no bunchiness - for less money. So glad I held off - now I can get what I really wanted but didn't know existed. Good luck!

$68 for a shirt to wear UNDER something....really?>

  • Julia
    Julia – Grommet Team
    2/2/2011 9:54 AM

@Carmela: That was my first reaction too, but my mind was changed with testing this innovative garment. I found it is a good investment if you have clothing in your closet is almost but not quite work appropriate. It even prevented me from frequent trips to the dry cleaner. Sleeveless dresses and blazers require frequent cleaning but with the long sleeve SkinnyShirt, I did not have to bring it to the dry cleaners with every wear.

Also, if you look closely at these tops, you can appreciate the quality. The designer has brought two materials together with uniquely different properties. With woven cotton blend and stretchy knit fabric, you would expect to see puckering where the two materials come together, but instead these shirts were thoughtfully executed with special stitching and construction to achieve a smooth finish. Stand back and the overall look is so polished.

As others have mentioned, this is a nice idea but the price eliminates any desire I might have to try it or gift it. That's a shame because it would surely be a hot item if the price was about $20-$30 less.

Love the idea but ... what's the difference between this and a dickie? I have several (much cheaper than $68 and NOT all dickies are turtleneck). Since I can't stand the heat of additional layers, my favorite dickie is a silky white one with a pointed collar (like the SkinnyShirt) with pearl buttons that can be worn either buttoned to the neck or left open and it stays in place (anchored by the weight of the sweater material on top of it). Something to consider.

I love the idea of this! I guess you cannot wear with a jacket that is open? Also is there any polyester in the knit? I cannot wear that??!! And now, I need a plus size , so when do you think that would be available? Thank you, sorry so many questions. Carol

@Carol Anderson: We are glad that these appeal to you! You are correct, you would not want to wear it with an open jacket. Good news for you that there is no polyester in it. The fiber content is 97% cotton, 3% spandex for the collar and ?90% nylon, 10% spandex for the body. We will let you know when plus sizes are available. Thanks for stopping by!

GREAT idea! For those of us who travel frequently, this is wonderful. I would love to see a higher spandex content available as an option to wear under more form fitting and lighter weight knits ,so the product would function as a "shaping garment" as well. Kudos for the idea and for the execution. I can't wait to receive my shipment!
