Wonder Machines

Art In Motion

Artist Jeff Lieberman made his first piece of optical illusion art for a pair of dancers as a wedding gift. He named it Slow Dance, which is a perfect fit for the happy couple and for the effect the sculpture art creates. Objects in the frame (feathers, or other lightweight things like leaves and flowers) appear to be moving in dreamy slow motion, but it’s a trick of the eye. Which Jeff knows all about from his work as a slow-speed photographer—along with his degrees in physics, math, engineering, and media arts and sciences. And though it’s science at work here, the effect it creates feels like magic. It’s art brought to life in a way that’s mesmerizing to watch and one we couldn’t look away from.

Quick Questions

How loud is the sculpture? Is it safe to touch?

The sculpture is very quiet. The magnets can be adjusted to change the "volume" of movement of the objects, so if you make the movement very large, it will create more noise.

Yes, it's safe to touch.

Is the strobe light blinking safe for those with photosensitive epilepsy?

If you have any history of photosensitive epilepsy, please consult your doctor before using.

Does the sculpture work when it's under bright light (daylight or otherwise)?

Given that the effect is based on strobe lights embedded in the frame, when there is sufficient ambient light (like sunlight), the effect is greatly weakened. With the included brightness control on full, the sculpture works for most indoor environments, even a few feet from the window.

What kind of objects can I use with the frame?

The best objects to use are small and light, like feathers, branches, and flowers, but explore anything that comes to mind. The frame comes with two feathers. Simply place the stem of the object in between the holder and the rubber band to lodge it into place.

Can the frame be mounted?

Yes, it can be mounted on the wall with the included wall hook and screw. It can also stand on a table with or without the extra support legs.
