Help From The Hive

Chafed hands, cracked ankles and sandpaper elbows? Sounds like a job for Worker B. Liesa Helfen and Michael Sedlacek parlayed their passion for bees into a line of handcrafted lotions and balms made from raw honey, beeswax and other natural ingredients. The two hive enthusiasts founded Worker B after Liesa noticed how soft her hands were when she worked with beeswax. Local bee farms supply all the honey and propolis (a powerful antibiotic/antifungal agent that sanitizes the interior of the hive), so that Liesa and Michael can ensure it comes from chemical-free hives. There are no fillers in Worker B’s skincare products. The ingredients from the hive -- honey, beeswax and propolis tincture -- provide natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory qualities, complemented by almond oil, olive oil, avocado oil, and essential oils such as chamomile, rosemary, lavender and bergamot. The Rescue Putty is Worker B’s strongest and thickest formula, intended for severely dry or damaged skin. Liesa and Michael also offer creams, lotions (scented and unscented), and their signature Lotion Bar, which looks like a bar of soap and incorporates loads of propolis to create an overall body conditioner that you can rub on all your dry spots. Our skin takes a beating every day, and Worker B helps us fight back with highly concentrated, naturally healing skincare products, straight from the hive.

Do you have sonething speciically for lip care? Or can any of these be used on the lips?

@m.susan conley: While all Worker B products can be used on your lips, I would suggest the Treatment Stick. This is a large format lip balm and can be used on more than just lips. Easily transportable, this product is great for spot treatments (knuckles, cheeks, elbows, etc) and of course lips.

Do you know if your products also help control psoriasis?

@Diana : We have had much customer feedback on this topic. The Lotion Bar has been the most successful of psoriasis control and this is most likely due to the large amount of bee propolis use in the formulation. In fact one of the beekeepers we work with has had bad psoriasis on his legs for many years and our Lotion Bar has been the most effective treatment he has found. . .and he said that it was more effective than the prescription treatments. In cases where skin has become very cracked (and more like an open wound), I would suggest the Rescue Putty. The large amount of raw honey here acts as an antiseptic to keep the area clean and promote healing.

@Barb Morton: All the products, including the Treatment Stick (which can be used as lip balm), are unscented, unless specifically stated. They are "naturally" scented depending on the ingredients used, which are listed in the DETAILS tab (under video). Thank you for your interest.

This product looks fantastic - the branding is wonderful and I was delighted to read the ingredients list and see all things natural and delicious sounding. My one question: what are the lotions, creams and lip balm packaged in?

    Thanks!

@Ryan Elizabeth: Our products are packaged in glass for the Cream, Putty and Scented/Unscented Lotions, plastic for the Treatment Stick, or a metal tin for the Lotion Bar. All packaging is able to be recycled and is made in the USA. We have just started working with a local manufacturer for the plastic as well. Labels are letter-press printed (the old-school way!) by a local artist.

I see that you use organic ingredients, but your beeswax is not organic. And I know that getting organic beeswax requires that the bees only be allowed to feed on Certified Organic botanicals...which sounds pretty difficult. Can you tell me why your beeswax is not certified? Not being certified just means that the bees could feed on botanicals that have been sprayed...right? I am by no means an expert at this and have limited knowledge. Your products look really nice.

@Patty Cason: Good question! Organic bee-products would require that the bees forage on only organic land, unfortunately, this is a pretty tall order in America since the honeybee can travel several miles in all directions. For all Worker B products, we source all bee products (honey, beeswax and propolis) from our own hives and those of other local beekeepers. We know these beekeepers personally and often times have helped them on their apiaries. These are chemical-free beehives only (no pesticides, antibiotics, etc.) and are not transported for pollination. Honey and beeswax are similar to a sponge, absorbing whatever is put in the hive. Just one of the many reasons to "know your beekeeper!"

How are you different from other competitiors like Burt's?

  • Michael

    3/7/2012 4:18 PM

@Mia: Worker B is different from other 'bee-based' skin care products for a number of reasons. First off, we are a three person company that sources all ingredients, formulates, manufactures and distributes all products ourselves - truly Hand-Crafted and not affiliated with any big manufacturer.

Secondly, and most importantly, we know all of the beekeepers we work with personally and work only with chemical-free beekeepers - this assures you of the highest quality beeswax, honey and propolis around. This is crucial because beeswax and honey absorb whatever chemical, antibiotic, or pesticide is used on or near the hives.

Third, all Worker B formulations are water, alcohol and filler free! Our line feels different because it is different! All products are highly concentrated, longer lasting and (we feel) much more beneficial.

I just wanted to comment and let you know how much I love your product. I had a case of poison ivy (on my face no less) and decided to use the rescue putty on it since it is an antiseptic, no only did it heal the areas quickly, there was no itch! Terrific product!

{!} (that is a standing ovation)

Just reading the comments, I am amazed at what excellent practices this small company has: local sourcing from personally known individuals; USA packaging; letter-press labels; virtually organic as far as the company can control, but bees will be bees—who knows what tasty inorganic flower they might prefer?

I’m in! and the help with psoriasis is the clincher; my mom has been asking me to do something about mine, which is new, but I do not want to use steroids. Bravo, Worker B!

I recently ordered the Rescue Putty and the regular Worker-B cream. The regular cream is the one that actually cured (yes, as in healed) the eczema I had had on the sides of my fingers for a few years now.

I had seen a dermatologist in 2010 who took a biopsy, subsequently diagnosed the eczema, and then prescribed the usual steroid ointment which I did not use - just felt very uncomfortable with this solution. In the meantime I had used tons of hand cream (scented and unscented, natural/organic, with and without urea, but nothing ever worked).

Until I noticed that whenever I used something that contained beeswax, my skin got noticeably better. However, most of these creams contained all kinds of other ingredients, noticeably Petrolatum. In search of a product with as much beeswax and as few other ingredients as possible, I found Worker-B.

And I am so glad I did! The thick and super-dry skin on my fingers has cleared up and for the first time in more than 3 years they look and feel normal. I use the cream once or twice a day, and also put an extra-thick layer on the known bad spots before I go to bed. I am still in shock that something so simple would work 100 %, and none of my many, many hand creams ever did.

Sorry for the long post but for me, this cream is IT, and I felt I should let people know about it. Thank you!
