Lightweight Lounger

Ready to Lounge

At a beach on the Bay of Biscay in La Rochelle, France, a group of friends discovered that an ordinary fisherman’s stool made a great prop for lounging. From that first idea to the final prototype, Denis Fritsch has worked to create a minimalist outdoor accessory that marries comfort with portability. Called Y-Ply, his invention is a collapsible, hammock-like stool that you can position in different ways, depending on how you want to relax. It’s simple, lightweight and flexible—ready to pack or unpack at a moment’s notice.

When you want to rest outdoors, simply unfold Y-Ply and click the legs into position. You can use it as a pillow or headrest if you want to lie down, or you can position it behind your lower back if you want a little extra support while you’re sitting. Y-Ply is made of washable canvas, and it folds into a compact carrying case when you’re ready to roll.

Bringing a lounge chair to a beach, campsite or outdoor concert sounds like a great idea, but it’s not always practical to lug a heavy chair to a faraway setting. Blankets and towels are easier to pack, but all you really gain is a thin cushion between you and the earth. For the best of both worlds—comfort and portability—we’re packing Y-Ply.

I am proud to introduce to you our Y-Ply, a simple, compact and comfortable solution to relaxing outdoors. It took us 2 years to perfect our design, but when we use it now, we can’t imagine living without it. I hope you will love it at the beach, in the garden or around town!

This looks like a wonderful device - but I envision using this at the beach and canvas takes a while to dry. Any thoughts of having a fast-drying nylon sling instead?

@Cathy -- That's a great idea! This fabric will dry quickly too, and there's not a lot of surface area that would keep it damp. We appreciated the weight of the canvas and found it to be a bit grippy and comfortable, too. Thanks for writing!

@CATHY Looks like the material is not canvas. Details say, " 75% polyester/15% cotton/10% viscose." I would imagine that's pretty quick-drying.

can I use this on the dock at the lake?

@jane -- Hi Jane! The bottom of the Y-ply needs something the "feet" can dig into a bit. If the dock is smooth, the chair will slip. Thanks for your question!

Can it be used as a stool to sit on as well?

@Liz -- It's not designed for sitting, but it's great for leaning against. The lounger can hold up to about 175 pounds, and it's very robust, so it wouldn't quickly break if you used at as a two-legged stool, but it's the leverage of your body weight against it that give it its stability in lounging positions. Thanks for the question!
