Winter Hats

Winter Warmers

At home in the Himalayas, people know how to do warm. Marion Surette and Sanjay Ranjit work with artisans in Nepal to create chic headwear styles that perfectly blend function and warmth.

After Sanjay’s mother sent him a box of traditional Nepalese hats that everyone loved, they tweaked their designs a bit, adding elements such as the faux fur trim and some fashion elements and Yak Apparel was born in 2008.

Yak Apparel uses wool for its hats, in keeping with Napalese tradition, but these days most of it comes from sheep
in New Zealand rather than yaks in the Himalayas. The bright, bold colors of the region are beautifully represented, and the tassels, pom-poms, ear flaps and faux fur trim add some fun that you don’t get with typical winter headwear. Best of all, they’re really warm. Yak hats are handmade from 100% wool, and they’re fully lined, so you can enjoy all the warmth of wool without feeling itchy. When winter hits full force, a Yak hat will keep you covered without sacrificing style. Read More Read Less

    All good, but sizes? Like 7 5/8?

    @D Lama:

    Since the hats are made of all flexible materials, one size fits most; teens and adults. For anyone with a hat size of S-M-L the hats work well.

    How am I assured that the one I receive is not from your china production but from Nepal?

    Almost all of our hats are made in Nepal. We only made a small batch in China because we wanted to make sure we have extra capacity in the future to be able to meet demand. All earflap styles are made in Nepal, and we also have most of the trapper hats made in Nepal.

    If you want to make sure your hat was "Made in Nepal" you can note that in the Gift message and we will make sure it is.

    What percentage of the profits go to the people who actually make the hats? Is there a coop or how are the people paid? I do not want to purchase unless I know that the profit goes back to the people. There are so many 'outsiders' exploiting third world communities for their own gain. Thank you in advance for the clarification.

    @conscience: Our whole business model is based on bringing prosperity to the Nepalese people, that is Sanjay's personal goal. We visit the facilities, know the manufacturers, meet the workers and are committed to ensuring that they have a continuous stream of income through our marketing efforts. Our model is to bring sustainable work to the region, building a solid economic environment.

    Hello, can you please let me know if you do anything to ensure humane treatment of the sheep by your suppliers? Also, what is your faux fur made out of?

    @ Jane: Our wool is supplied from New Zealand which is the world's largest supplier of quality wool. We work only with best quality wool, which comes from top quality suppliers. Our faux fur is made from synthetics, no animals are involved.

    I really liked your hats, and I was going to get a couple until Iread that some of the hats are made in CHINA???!!! and not Nepal. I don't like to be misguided and don't like the idea of doing business with china when they are hurting so much the Nepal and adjacent area. Shame on you guys.

    @ jd: We are committed to making our products in Nepal. But we did produce a small batch in China once last year. We found that hats made in Nepal are of superior quality, aside from the fact that our goal is to support Nepal in its efforts to grow its economy. As you know, Sanjay is born and raised in Kathmandu and feels strongly about supporting his country. If you want to make sure that you receive a hat made in Nepal, then note this in the Gift message area when you place your order and we will be sure to accommodate.
