It's Only Natural

This yoga mat is handmade of all-natural cotton in India according to traditional methods. It’s hard to imagine turning cotton thread into a woven yoga mat without using electronic machinery, but that’s how Yogasana mats are made. Each is woven on a manual loom by a master weaver who signs the final product. All the dyes used to color the threads are natural; the dyed cotton dries in the sun, and the residual dye water is used to irrigate fruit and vegetable fields that surround the manufacturing facility. The idea of a cotton mat for yoga is not new, but dates back to the origin of the practice. Yogasana founder Kevin Aylward has been making cotton rugs in India for 15 years, and his foray into yoga mats continues his focus on sustainable manufacturing processes. The hand-loomed yoga rugs are exceptionally durable and easy to clean (by hand or machine), and they absorb sweat without getting slippery. We recommend pairing a Yogasana mat with the Grip-It rubber underlay, which keeps the mat from shifting. For us, the natural materials and traditional manufacturing techniques are the perfect complement to our favorite yoga classes.

Greetings friends of Peace! I’m pleased to partner with the Daily Grommet to introduce Yogasana! - The world’s most eco-sustainable yoga mat. Long before the advent of plastic (and the sticky mat) yoga was practiced on cotton and wool rugs. It’s not a new idea but a very old one. In fact, ancient Vedic texts suggest that as Patanjali codified the yoga sutras he did so on a Yogasana Mat…we can’t attest to this fact… who knows for sure! Please ask…and I will do my best to provide an answer. Namaste!

How do you clean the mats?

They are cold water washable. They can be cleaned by hand or in a machine. Line dry. Thanks for asking.

    Hi,

Looks beautiful. How much cushioning does it provide? Karen

The mats are 5 to 6 mm thick. Not as thick as a Pilates mat or other thick rubber mats. It's initially a firm feel and gets softer after washing and over time. You can also use it over an existing mat if you need more cushion.

Will my feet slide across the mat like they would if I did yoga on a rug?

@Nancy: I talked to a tester and she says "The grip is good, but gets even better as you sweat. If you need extra grip then you can spray a mist of diluted essential oil spray for even better grip. Imagine your yoga ritual w/ the aroma of your favorite scent rather than synthetic mat smell. Cotton rugs are different than synthetic with more friction. It is definitely a completely different experience but one that I really appreciated. It took focus to adapt to the new mat, but now it feels like a much more natural fit."

@Nancy: Yogasana Mats have a texture that help prevent slipping. Also as you sweat more during your yoga practice the mat will provide more grip…this is the nature of cotton. But, our mat does not provide the same feel as a sticky mat. Some yogis find that they need maximum ‘stick’ on the mat. In this instance, the Yogasana mat may not be the best choice. Most have found the grip to be good and they like the natural feel of a cotton surface. We also provide a Grip It! pad to prevent the mat from slipping on a studio floor. I hope this helps

@Kevin Aylward and Katherine Klinger: Thanks for your replies and helpful hints. I had a vision of myself in Warrior pose with my feet slowly slipping and ending up in a split.

    Thanks!

    Hi Kevin,

Helpful selling points... With cotton mats it's often suggested that you take a spray bottle and spray your mat down with a little lavender or tea tree water prior to practicing to get the same effect sweat would have on the grip. And if you're alignment is good - the grip is less important - so a cotton mat will improve your practice over time. ;-)

    Looks like a wonderful product!

I am pleased with my Yogasana mat. One of my favorite Grommet purchases. It stays rolled out on a rugged floor and I am not a heavy duty yoga person so grip is not an issue for me. I love that it doesn't smell like chemicals when I get my face close to it like other mats I've used. My husband does more of a routine and has had a little difficulty with the grip but I will convey to him the misting idea. I suspect it will make a big difference. He likes that our dog doesn't put holes in it with his claws like the synthetic mats we've used.

@Emily: Fantastic! Thank you for taking the time to share why this cotton mat works so well for you. We hope the misting works for your husband. It must be very nice to enjoy having your dog around & not be shooing him/her away from the mat.
